Does Facebook still sell discriminatory ads?

image-1-6-796x417.png
In May, a Wisconsin health care agency, Tenderness Health Care, posted a job ad on Facebook looking for personal care workers. According to Facebook’s “Why am I seeing this ad” pop-up, when the agency purchased the ad, it asked Facebook to not show it to anyone over 54 years of age. And they asked Facebook to show it specifically to people who have “African American multicultural affinity.” Facebook, apparently, complied. The problem? Federal law prohibits employers from discriminating on the basis of age and race, including in advertising open jobs. When The Markup brought the ad to Facebook’s attention, the…

How Putin’s Russia obsessively hounded opposition leader Alexei Navalny – Up News Info

“We got all the information from the special services,” said Dmitry Belousov, the scriptwriter on “Liberals Paid In Black Cash,” a 2017 anti-Navalny film. “They put the information on our server and we had access.” It was one attack on Navalny among many over the past decade, as he has been watched, harassed, jailed, intimidated […]

Florida Department of Health claims number of COVID-19 cases in schools is confidential – (untrue – another attempt to look good by not posting information on real data)

“We feel very strongly that families need to know this information. Particularly parents, because they are making enrollment, attendance decisions based on this information. It’s the district’s stance that we want to provide it,” said Pierce. “We have engaged our own attorneys assigned to the school system and we are now in the process of doing what the DOH advised that we do. Which, is to seek the permission of the state department of health because again, you know, if I were a parent with a child in school right now, I would want to know because that’s going to impact the decisions I make.”

Iowa tops NYT’s national list of COVID-19 hot spots | News, Sports, Jobs – Times Republican

The Times reported sharp increases in cases in Story County, home of Iowa State University; Johnson County, where the University of Iowa is located; Webster County, where a prison in Fort Dodge has had outbreaks; Lee County in southeast Iowa; and Marion County, which includes Knoxville.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds closed bars and similar facilities late Thursday in six counties — Black Hawk, Dallas, Johnson, Linn, Polk and Story — noting that university parties and other gatherings sans masks had been one factor in the spread of the virus. Her action brought immediate protests from owners of bars who said thousands of jobs could be lost, along with some businesses.

Madison nurses start company to provide online COVID-19 screening | Local News | madison.com

By providing screening online, the nurses are reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission and helping to preserve medical masks and other protective equipment that would be needed to conduct the service in person. “We can get our nursing resources where they need to go without burning through the supply that we need more in our acute care setting,” Loughlin said.

As guests were screened at the Salvation Army shelter one afternoon last week, most seemed to welcome the online exchange with Loughlin, some waving to her before and after her questions and tips. With many staying there several nights in a row, it has become a daily ritual.

The CDC’s testing guidance will make the pandemic worse

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

More than 180,000 people have died because of COVID-19 in the United States. And this week, the agency tasked with fighting the worst pandemic in a century recommended surrender.

Earlier this week, the US Centers for Disease Control updated its COVID-19 advice to recommend fewer people get tested for the virus. The agency’s previous advice urged tests for “all close contacts” of infected people, stressing the importance of contacts being “quickly identified and tested.” Now, it says people without symptoms “do not necessarily need a test,” even if they were directly exposed or attended a large gathering in a viral hotspot. It makes exceptions for “vulnerable individuals” and adds a vague instruction to follow local health officials —…

As Determined Couple Sues NY State To Have Their Wedding Party, A Small Maine Wedding Becomes Fatal Superspreader Event – Gothamist

Over 120 people have been infected with coronavirus and one has died after an August 7th wedding that exceeded indoor pandemic capacity guidelines at a Maine inn. Now the inn’s owners say they misinterpreted guidance from the state on holding indoor gatherings.

Currently, Maine is limiting indoor gatherings to 50 people, but the Big Moose Inn at Millinocket Lake allowed the wedding of 62 people to take place.

Last week, a few dozen COVID-19 cases were linked to the wedding, but now Maine health officials say 123 people have tested positive as a result of the wedding. According to the Boston Globe, 25% of the cases were tertiary, “meaning they were infected by someone who was infected by someone who attended the wedding.”
