Today is the first day of the payroll tax deferral. Here’s what we know (Formula for chaos and endangering Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid)

  • Recent guidance from the IRS doesn’t explicitly say that employers must participate. Companies that do may give employees the choice of opting into the deferral, but it will depend on the employer, payroll experts say.
  • Employees who participate in the deferral will see a short-term increase in pay. But remember — they will face “double withholding” in the first four months of 2021, so their take-home pay will go down during that period.

Black Kenosha News Editor Resigns Over Jacob Blake Rally Coverage

The incident highlights an ongoing debate in the media about representation and coverage. At a time when Kenosha is roiled by racial injustice, the Kenosha News is without any Black full-time staffer to help tell the story of what is happening in the city. It also highlights the disproportionate impact journalists can have on a story, simply by the editorial choices they make. Journalist and author Wesley Lowery pointed out that the very subjective choice of highlighting one speaker over another speaks to the very fallacy of “objective” journalism.

Trump White House Warns Colleges: Don’t Send Your COVID-Infected Students Home! (Clearly, Trump and Pence have no plan to fight/control Covid-19)

According to a New York Times tracker of COVID-19 at American colleges and universities, some 26,000 cases have emerged at over 750 institutions since the novel coronavirus hit the United States early this year. At the University of Alabama system alone, over 1,300 cases have been reported, according to the school’s own coronavirus case tracker.

Those spikes in infections have put college and university officials in a difficult position over how to manage community spread on their campuses.
