Ultra-Orthodox rioters, police clash over COVID-19 enforcement operations – The Jerusalem Post

Severe civil unrest in ultra-Orthodox communities broke out on Sunday, as police sought to enforce the national coronavirus lockdown in several cities, resulting in violent resistance and, in some instances, aggressive police action. Violent confrontations broke out between police and haredi (ultra-Orthodox) radicals in Jerusalem, Bnei Brak and Betar Illit, and more than 20 rioters were arrested.

Why are Israel’s hassidim violently opposing coronavirus restrictions? – The Jerusalem Post

What is concerning in this incident is that the police were nowhere to be seen. Despite it being well known that the Belz community is praying en masse without regard for social distancing, mask wearing, or any health regulations, law enforcement authorities have apparently decided to ignore this enormous violation of the rule of law.

They appear, in fact, to have tacitly accepted that such areas are extraterritorial to its authority.

This state of affairs has huge consequences for the nation, in particular the state’s ability to bind the ultra-Orthodox sector more tightly into the fabric of society and form a more cohesive country.

If in the Jewish state large sections of the population can decide for themselves which laws to obey and which to ignore, the ability of the country to maintain internal solidarity and continue to overcome the many challenges it faces, internally and externally, will surely come under ever-increasing strain. Mother’s milk could help fight coronavirus, study finds | South China Morning Post

Mother’s milk could prevent or treat Covid-19, according to a new study by Chinese scientists.

A research team in Beijing tested the effect of human breast milk on cells exposed to the Sars-CoV-2 virus. The milk was collected in 2017, well before the start of the pandemic, and the cell types tested varied from animal kidney cells to young human lung and gut cells.

The results were the same: most living virus strains were killed by the milk.
