Amy Coney Barrett’s appointment is a wake-up call for female voters | Amy Coney Barrett | The Guardian

It’s not only Roe v Wade that’s on the line under a Barrett court. Paid leave, affordable childcare, equal pay, voting rights, racial justice, and LGBTQ+ equality are in jeopardy. And with arguments on the Affordable Care Act slated for 10 November, Barrett may have the chance to repeal critical health care protections in the middle of a pandemic. At a time when we’ve just passed the grim threshold of 8 million Americans infected with Covid-19 and more than 225,000 dead, making it harder to get healthcare is the last thing we should be doing.

It’s outrageous that an impeached president who lost the popular vote can install a supreme court justice who would gut the Affordable Care Act despite majority support for the law – a law that made it so that women can no longer be charged more for health coverage because of our gender, or denied insurance because of a pre-existing condition such as breast cancer. It’s equally outrageous to see Republican senators prioritizing this bad-faith confirmation process despite their failure to pass a desperately-needed coronavirus relief bill. But none of this is surprising. Barrett’s nomination is part of a broader effort by the extreme right to allow minority views to rule over the will of the majority of Americans – in this case, women.

Fighting an Uphill Senate Re-election Battle, Doug Jones Does It His Way – The New York Times

“Somebody’s got to speak out,” Mr. Jones said of his decision to publicly address the movement. “And if you base the calculation only on whether it will win you an election, then you will never, ever do it.”

“That’s the problem that I’ve seen with so many Democrats from the South: The calculation was based not on helping the state or the country, but whether or not it helps the particular election,” he continued. “This is a much bigger issue than one Senate election in the state of Alabama.”

Chicago’s Biggest Coronavirus Surge Is On The Southwest Side, Where Groups Are Begging For More Testing – Block Club Chicago

The Southwest Side is being hit hardest by the second surge of coronavirus in Chicago — and local leaders say the area never fully recovered from the pandemic’s devastating first wave.

In the 60629 and 60632 ZIP codes — which include parts of Gage Park, West Elsdon, Marquette Park, Chicago Lawn, West Lawn, Brighton Park and Archer Heights — 11,300 confirmed cases have been reported and 225 people have died from coronavirus. One in every 18 residents has had a confirmed case, according to city data.

The 60632 and 60629 ZIP codes also have the highest positivity rates in the city, at 27.5 and 27.9, respectively. That’s nearly double what the ZIP codes faced in mid-August.

Westmoreland County school officials scrambling after ‘substantial’ COVID-19 designation | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Two Westmoreland County school districts are shifting instruction online to help stamp out a COVID-19 outbreak following a state Department of Education recommendation Monday to close all schools in the county.

But Hempfield Area School District directors voted, 8-1, Monday to ignore the state’s recommendation and keep classrooms open for students. Two additional districts confirmed they will discuss their options, and another canceled plans to move to five-day, in-person classes until at least November.

Hempfield school director Diane Cibatoni cast the lone dissenting vote against staying open, an option also supported by Superintendent Tammy Wolicki. Hempfield is the biggest school district in Westmoreland, with 5,300 students affected by the vote.

Coronavirus Is Roaring Back In Colorado With Record-High Cases | Colorado Public Radio

Colorado obliterated its record for COVID-19 cases in a day, with more than 2,100 reported Sunday, Oct. 25, as the coronavirus approached or surpassed records in all parts of the state, and rising intensive care occupancy created new concerns about capacity. Before this past weekend, Colorado had never recorded more than 1,267 new cases in a day. Then came Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when the state recorded 1,604, 1,594 and 2,102 cases on consecutive days. Those also coincided with three of the busiest testing days in the state since the start of the pandemic in March, with a record 31,847 tests reported administered on Sunday.
