Jose Garcia, New Mexico Farmworker, Dies at 68 – The New York Times – RIP – COVID-19

Jose Garcia, who died on Dec. 15 from complications of Covid-19, with his wife and children.

Mr. Garcia is survived by his wife, Genoveva; seven daughters, Corina, Consuelo, Carolina, Raquel, Erika, Sandra and Adriana; two sons, Jose and Andres; 28 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

After his funeral, his work truck bore his coffin to the cemetery, in a procession that included his grandchildren riding along in a trailer, on bales of hay. A tractor led the way. “That’s how people saw him,” Consuelo Garcia said — often driving his tractor in the neighborhood to clear debris after a storm or to carry out tasks to help neighbors.

“Now that we don’t have him,” she said, “we realize the great person he was to the community and how he touched so many people.”

Merry Christmas!

Christmas is a time wherein we celebrate love, warmth, cheer, kindness, and selflessness. It has never died out for all these years due to its magic of spreading heaps of love and joy. Why should this year be any different?

Saania's diary - reflections, learnings, sparkles

Despite this year being a gravely miserable and pitiful one, Christmas is a holiday that reinforces our beliefs to feel happy, transform, and become a part of a society with the same common spirit that connects us all.

However, there are people out there who don’t get that magical, cozy, wintery Christmas of twinkling lights and mandarin oranges that all of us run after. There are some people who are carrying silent burdens throughout these weeks. Some who are cold, alone, sad, unwell, or struggling – and they are all around us. So for any of us who are feeling the Christmas spirit, we can spread love this season and acknowledge the fact that we are blessed. This time of the year is all about giving gifts and celebrating, and we can spread gifts of kindness in a world where it is needed the most.

Still Not Convinced There’s A COVID-19 Crisis? LA Doctors Are Told To Have End Of Life Talk With Fragile Patients

Hospitals are already adding beds, moving ICU patients to other areas, and trying to retrain staff to backfill for highly trained ER doctors and ICU nurses.

But they’re losing the fight.

“There are very limited hospital and ICU beds available and emergency departments are strained to capacity,” reads the health alert from Dr. Sharon Balter, head of Public Health’s Division of Communicable Disease Control and Prevention.

The memo notes that, over the past two weeks, the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has jumped by 90%.

As of Wednesday, a staggering 6,155 Angelenos were hospitalized in L.A. County with the virus, and 20% of them were in ICUs spread across the county’s acute-care hospitals.

“We are forecasting that in this current surge — between Nov. 1 and Jan. 31 — 8,700 people in Los Angeles County will die from COVID. That is nearly three times the number of people that died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks,” Ghaly said in a press call yesterday.

“The worst is yet to come,” she warned.
