Alexander Selkirk (1676 – 13 December 1721) was a Scottish privateer and Royal Navy officer who spent four years and four months as a castaway (1704–1709) after being marooned by his captain on an uninhabited island in the South Pacific Ocean.

Selkirk was an unruly youth, and joined buccaneering voyages to the South Pacific during the War of the Spanish Succession.

One such expedition was on Cinque Ports, captained by Thomas Stradling under the overall command of William Dampier.

Stradling’s ship stopped to resupply at the uninhabited Juan Fernández Islands, and Selkirk judged correctly that the craft was unseaworthy and asked to be left there.

Myanmar coup: Suu Kyi no longer West’s priority?

Myanmar’s people’s votes and freedoms under attack – they need the world’s support!

Aung San Suu #Kyi’s fall from grace as a rights icon has dampened Western enthusiasm for her as #Myanmar’s leader, but governments will still press for her release after Monday’s coup in order to return to democratic rule. Long celebrated as a pro-democracy activist, Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize while under house arrest in 1991. But as the country’s elected leader since 2015, she has faced an international outcry at her defence of allegations of against at Myanmar’s Rohingya population. FRANCE 24’s Philip Turle tells us more.

The ageing of the guard in Putin’s Russia | The Interpreter

this time, Putin’s enemies are inside Russia’s gates and not just bashing against them. The biggest test yet of Putin’s monolithic authority is a mundane one: the disconnect between rhetoric and reality. Navalny’s YouTube exposé of an enormous palace on the Black Sea, which he alleged was built for Putin by corrupt oligarchs, has now been viewed by tens of millions of Russians. True or not, it seems to have convinced much of the population that the Russian rot starts at the very top.

Under Putin’s watch, Russia has also seriously bungled its response to Covid-19. Its much-hyped Sputnik V vaccine has been slow to roll out. In December, Russia revealed that it had undercounted deaths from the pandemic by two thirds, putting it behind only Brazil and the US among nations with the worst overall death toll.

COVID Gifts, Again

It never seems to end… If you have a genetic weakness, it can trigger it into action – sadly

CRAIN'S COMMENTS

There are times when it gets weary to write about the coronavirus. The something new crops up that people need to know.

One of the great unknowns about COVID-19 is the long term effects, and whether these affects only apply to people with severe cases.

One of my family members had COVID-19 in January 2020. Roughly three weeks after the initial symptoms disappeared, her gall bladder suddenly became inflamed and had to be removed. The same thing happened to one of my insurance clients — infection, then gall bladder removal.

Articles started to appear in June 2020 about the impact of COVID-19 on the gastrointestinal tract, but none linked it to severe gall bladder inflammation.

The digestive system involves the gastrointestinal tract (GI) along with the liver, pancreas, and gall bladder which should be taken care of as COVID, apart from interrupting other body parts, affects the GI tract too…
