Bad news and pretty good news

Roadtirement

Completely unrelated but kind of cute photo

Which do you want first?  Ok, the bad news: We had appointments for our first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine scheduled for 3 PM this afternoon. Last night the State Department of Health sent us text messages stating that due to the impending snow storm our appointments were cancelled. Rats!

This large storm is all over the news. It is touted as one that affects millions and millions of people. (When did they start tallying how many are affected by snow, rain, hurricanes, etc.) We had about an inch of snow overnight. The big storm is supposed to hit here about 3 PM dumping up to 9 inches they say.

Oh yea, the good news. This morning we called the information number for vaccine scheduling. First we found out that after our appointments today were cancelled that we went to the back of…

Opinion | The people of Myanmar have been robbed of their democracy. But they aren’t giving up. – The Washington Post

The protests this week have brought out a huge cross section of the population, including medical personnel, lawyers and Buddhist monks. The Associated Press reports that civil servants in many areas have been risking their jobs to demonstrate for democracy. In a dramatic video shot Wednesday in a small village, 42 police officers declared their allegiance to the ousted elected government and resisted the entreaties of a senior officer to return to duty. Local residents flocked to their side to ward off any effort to arrest them.

That is the mind-set that will save Myanmar. Although Aung San Suu Kyi’s reputation was tarnished by her support for the ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims, her generation of democrats are the best hope for the country. They will be tested, hunted and persecuted — as Aung San Suu Kyi is now, once again, under arrest — but they have been tested before. The military coup is illegitimate. Myanmar has experienced decades of such misrule by men in epaulets. No wonder people do not wish to tolerate it for another day.

Hamas court says women need a male guardian’s approval to travel – Los Angeles Times – (This is 2021, not 1021…)

A Hamas-run Islamic court in the Gaza Strip has ruled that women require the permission of a male guardian to travel, further restricting movement in and out of the territory that has been blockaded by Israel and Egypt since the militant group seized power.

The rollback in women’s rights could spark a backlash in Gaza at a time when the Palestinians plan to hold elections later this year. It could also solidify Hamas’ support among its conservative base at a time when it faces criticism over living conditions in the territory it has ruled since 2007.

Anger as Bolsonaro moves to make guns easier to access: ‘A threat to democracy’

Gun control campaigners appalled after Brazil’s pro-gun president announces four decrees to facilitate acquiring weapons

Jair Bolsonaro’s latest efforts to make guns more easily available to Brazilians have sparked anger and trepidation with some calling the moves a threat to the South American country’s young democracy.

Brazil’s pro-gun president announced four presidential decrees designed to facilitate legal access to weapons on Saturday morning, as the country’s coronavirus death toll swelled to nearly 240,000.

New skin patch promises comprehensive health monitoring – UPI.com

Researchers say a newly designed patch -- which works best when worn on the neck -- can accurately monitor blood pressure, heart rate and glucose in real time. Photo courtesy of UC San Diego “This type of wearable would be very helpful for people with underlying medical conditions to monitor their own health on a regular basis,” co-first author of the study Lu Yin said in a news release.

“It would also serve as a great tool for remote patient monitoring, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when people are minimizing in-person visits to the clinic,” Yin, a nano-engineering doctoral student at the University of California, San Diego.

In addition to monitoring chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as pinpointing the onset of sepsis, the patch could help predict people at risk of becoming severely ill with COVID-19.
