Vegetarian Meatloaf — Nourish

Katherine grew up eating her mother’s homemade meatloaf with ketchup smeared on top. Fast forward to becoming a vegetarian as an adult, and it was Nana Elinor who made this vegetarian version that captures the same delicious taste and childhood nostalgia.

Learning from COVID?

In an era that will see more pandemics, additional hospital capacity means fewer will die and more survive – Survival is a good thing for humans.

CRAIN'S COMMENTS

One of the interesting set of charts on the Johns Hopkins COVIS-19 site are those showing the national supply of ICU beds and percent of them occupied by coronavirus and non-coronavirus patients.

My own state, New Jersey, has more than doubled the number of ICU beds available since the pandemic started — and has kept all of them online even as the pandemic subsided. If we have another round of this, New Jersey seems to have the resources to deal with it. New Jersey was caught early in the virus outbreak, but has had ample capacity for subsequent waves.

Other states are doing something different. Possibly reflecting rural hospital closings, the number of available ICU beds is declining as the number of coronavirus cases subsides. These states, like New Jersey, expanded capacity as the pandemic ramped up, but are now contracting capacity as the pandemic ebbs. Is that a good…

8 Egyptian Women Who Inspire Us — Egyptian Streets

Every day, and not just on International Women’s Day, they inspire us. They inspire us through their rebellion, the positive impact they’ve had and the lives they’ve decided to lead for themselves, helping other women – and sometimes men too – find the courage to do so as well. They inspire us through their humility,…

What You Can and Can’t Do Once You’re Vaccinated – Mother Jones

  1. The CDC defines fully-vaccinated people as those who are two weeks out of their second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines and two weeks out of receiving the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
  2. Fully-vaccinated people are also safe to interact with those who are not vaccinated, but those gatherings are limited to one household where members do not belong to a high-risk COVID category. “Here’s an example,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said in a White House virtual event announcing the guidelines. “If grandparents have been vaccinated, they can visit their daughter and her family, even if they have not been vaccinated, so long as the daughter and her family are not at risk for severe disease.”
  3. Fully-vaccinated people are also okay to refrain from quarantine measures if exposed to a potential outbreak, as long as they do not exhibit symptoms. Public mask-wearing and keeping physical distance in large gatherings should still be observed.

ASIA/MYANMAR – Two young people killed in the complex of the Catholic Cathedral surrounded by the military – Agenzia Fides

To avoid the beatings and the arrest, young demonstrators took refuge in the complex of the Cathedral of Saint Colomban but the soldiers began to open fire against the unarmed young people. The tragic toll is 2 young people killed and 7 injured. The Cathedral complex – reveal Fides sources – was surrounded by the army which intends to hunt down demonstrators.
In this context, there was the intervention of the Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese, His Exc. Bishop Francis Daw Tang, and Sister Ann Nu Tawng, the nun who became an “icon” of peace for having blocked the advance of soldiers in recent days, by kneeling in front of them. The nun tried to play a role of mediator between the demonstrators and the soldiers to avoid a massacre. Despite the call to the police force “not to arrest and prosecute peaceful demonstrators”, the agents opened fire and refused to leave the scene.
According to observers, the army occupied hospitals and university campuses last weekend and intensified night raids in preparation for another nationwide strike. Violence and arrests occurred in larger cities such as Yangon, Naypyitaw and Mandalay.
“We have received credible reports from hospitals occupied today in Myanmar, including at least four hospitals in Yangon and at least one in Mandalay”, said James Rodehaver, head of the UN human rights team in Myanmar. “This is completely unacceptable. Hospitals are places under the protection of international humanitarian law”, he said.
