Murphy, Toomey say background check bill could pass Senate | TheHill

Toomey said that with the expansion to commercial sales, background checks will cover a “vast, vast majority of all transactions,” adding that it would represent “progress.”

“Between the sales that already occur at licensed firearm dealers, all of which require a background check, and what we consider commercial sales, advertised sales, gun shows, and on the internet, that covers a vast, vast majority of all transactions,” Toomey said. “And it would be progress if we had background checks for those categories.”

These comments followed remarks from Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy (Conn.), who expressed optimism that Congress could pass gun reform legislation on a bipartisan basis.

“I’ve gotten a lot of calls from Republicans in the Senate who don’t want to fight this fight any longer because the NRA’s authority is fading, the anti-gun violence movement’s impact is increasing. I think we have a chance,” Murphy told Todd.

The conversation regarding gun reform was reignited following two deadly shootings in Atlanta and Boulder, Colo., which took the lives of a combined 18 people.

Following the violence, President Biden urged Congress to pass a ban on assault weapons and close loopholes in the background check system.

“I don’t need to wait another minute, let alone an hour, to take common sense steps that will save lives in the future and to urge my colleagues in the House and Senate to act,” Biden said in remarks at the White House. “We can ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in this country once again. I got that done when I was a senator. … We should do it again.”

He also called on the Senate to “immediately pass” two House-approved bills that would expand background checks for gun sales, noting that both bills passed through the House with some Republican support.

Defense chiefs from U.S., Japan and allies condemn Myanmar violence

“As Chiefs of Defense, we condemn the use of lethal force against unarmed people by the Myanmar Armed Forces and associated security services,” they said in a joint statement, after local media reported that at least 114 were killed Saturday in the bloodiest day since anti-coup protests began in February.

The use of deadly force to crack down on demonstrations has been intensifying since the military ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government on Feb. 1. The latest violence came as the military celebrated its annual Armed Forces Day.

The river is a beautiful example

Of union, of power, of strength

Have you seen the source of a river?

It’s just a water eye

Almost always lonely, shy

That along the way

With other strands it unites

Gaining body, volume

It is now a stream …

Still without pride

Accepting willingly,

The waters that arrive

Soon, it soon becomes a stream

But, the goal is bigger

Need the ocean to reach

The road is still long

Our river continues to drain

The tributaries contribute

It is now a stream

Its width expands

Its waters are renewed,

With contributions for the course

Exceeds limits …

Finally the sea reaches

A perfect cycle of nature.

We humans could

Take the example of the river

Put pride aside

We become one, united

Proving for ourselves

That we overcome any obstacle …

Edward “Butch” O’Hare

Pacific Paratrooper

Lt. Edward “Butch” O’Hare, Feb. 1942

On Feb. 20, 1942, the flattop Lexington was steaming toward the Japanese base at Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, when it was approached by two enemy flying boats. Their crews managed to signal its coordinates before American fighters flamed the planes, and the Japanese immediately launched an attack against Lexington.

That chance encounter had dire implications for the U.S., which couldn’t afford the loss of a single ship and certainly not a carrier.

American radar picked up two waves of Japanese aircraft. Mitsubishi G4M1 “Betty” bombers—good planes with experienced pilots.

Six American fighters led by legendary pilot Jimmy Thach intercepted one formation, breaking it up and downing most of the Bettys.

The second wave, however, approached from another direction almost unopposed.

Almost.

Two American fighters were close enough to intercept the second flight of eight bombers. The Navy pilots flew Grumman F4F-3 Wildcats, which like…

« Nossos espíritos xapiri estão muito preocupados em ver a terra virar fantasma » | Barbara Crane Navarro

«Nossa floresta ainda é linda … enraizada no centro do céu antigo.

Postal banking, alcohol delivery could save the U.S. Postal Service, experts say

McConnell said postal banking could help raise critical revenue and serve the public, noting consumer advocates would find it particularly appealing to have a post office that’s able to provide consumers with digital wallets, low-fee ATM machines and an ability to cash checks without paying the often-exorbitant fees that check-cashing establishments charge.

Also in favor of postal banking: a growing number of economists, including Melanie Long, an assistant professor of economics at The College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio.

“Postal banking has been used in other parts of the world to democratize services,” she said, noting that postal services in 139 countries around the world offer some form of financial services.
