How pandemic responses neglected disabled people’s rights

The few existing studies on disability and disaster recovery highlight the importance of working with disabled people to build their requirements into emergency planning from the outset. But it’s clear this lesson hasn’t been learned. In most countries, disabled people were at best an afterthought, and often their needs weren’t considered at all. What’s often missing from popular narratives about disabled people are stories about their resilience. Disabled people’s organisations have been vital in many countries in distributing food, PPE and health information in the absence of official support. Unfortunately, by continuing to stereotype disability as a medical problem or a tragic experience, society fails to recognise the social factors that make disabled people vulnerable in the first place.

Spillway Falls with Hemlock

Michael Stephen Wills Photography

The Dry Creek dam is across the upper, eastern, end of Fillmore Glen. Historical records of the dam construction must exist someplace. My opinion is, somewhere in the federal bureaucracy there is a record proving this dam was constructed by Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s. That is when the gorge trails were dramatically improved and it is logical a dam was necessary to control water flow during times of heavy rainfall and the spring thaw, to allow a full appreciation of the gorge beauty. It is a substantial concrete structure with cast iron controls, two spillways: one never, the second always flowing. This day the reservoir is full, frequented by beavers, stocked trout, herons, blue jays, crows, hermit thrush. The reservoir banks are thick with wildflowers of the season. This afternoon I noticed purple flowering raspberries: a past prime bloom or two, ripe fruit growing in the late…

All Thy Ignorant

Grounds For Hope

All thy ignorant, all thy vile

If you can’t see that you have poisoned the Earth.

Short- term thinkers, noisy and loud

Decided fear to control your thoughts

Inactions caused tangles and knots.

All thy obdurate, all thy wretched

Obsessed with fame and lavish lifestyle

Gripped by idleness, unsympathetic to humankind

Polluting the Earth

Polluting each other’s souls with venom and bile.

Astronomia

Sure, work and responsibilities are cold.
But in our minds, we’re never growing old.
You only live once.
We spend it on a dance.
Never going home.
Free, everywhere to roam.
We are young and free.
Bones and muscles still healthy.
We’re not going to stop.
Until with exhaustion we drop.
We dance away every feeling…

Inhale Peace; Exhale Love. Joy will Follow! - RUELHA

This used to be my favourite song for a very long time around 2013. It was released somewhere in 2010, but I never heard it until a few years later. It was my ringtone, my alarm and the song I’d play on a continuous loop. This ‘never go home’ version has lyrics added to it. Honestly, I don’t see very deep rooted emotions or interpretations that can be excavated from these lyrics. But, this song just makes me smile reminiscing those days. So, I’m going to go ahead a attempt to write a short poem. Let’s see what I come up with.
