New York Post Reporter Who Wrote False Kamala Harris Story Resigns – The New York Times

Despite these facts, The New York Post initially repeated the falsehoods in a follow-up article falsely claiming that “thousands” of copies of Ms. Harris’s book had been distributed at migrant shelters.

The rise and collapse of the tabloid’s false accusations about the vice president illustrated the speed at which political misinformation can be weaponized in the modern media environment. The Post later issued brief corrections, but only after its falsehoods had been amplified at face value by leading Republican lawmakers and cable news stars.

“Now they’re forcing taxpayers to buy Kamala Harris’s book to give to those illegal immigrants?” Senator Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas, wrote on Twitter on Sunday, adding a link to the Post story; Mr. Cotton’s tweet was later deleted.

On Tuesday, the author of the original Post article, Laura Italiano, wrote on Twitter that she had resigned from the paper, describing the Harris article as “an incorrect story I was ordered to write and which I failed to push back hard enough against.” She added, “I’m sad to leave.”

Ms. Italiano, a veteran Post journalist and longtime chronicler of the New York City courts, is a well-liked figure in the paper’s newsroom. She did not respond to inquiries about her resignation or how the Harris article came to be. Representatives for The Post did not respond to calls and emails on Tuesday night.

Insurrection

Grounds For Hope

Attack on Liberty, attack on Freedom
 By privileged and violent insurrectionists
Carrying the flag from ku klux klan
Combusting false claims of a stolen election.

 Dictator carried on his plan
The plan he told to all so clear.
Poisonous words tasted like a sweet elixir
To spineless men afraid of fear.

 Dictator used corrosive tactics.
Learned from his dear pal, the Russian friend.
 Insidiously spread propaganda
 Eroding truth, spreading threats.

 The cowardly men pleasing idol
Worship their god - they're lost souls.
Exploding with fury, they are homicidal.
Liberty and Freedom take the toll.

The meek and humble cower in fear.
 Sheltered behind and under fixtures
 Pleading and silently praying
In disbelieve, refusing to see the “big” picture.

RIP – Erica Chang, Motivated by the Pandemic to Help, Dies at 24 – The New York Times

Erica Chang, who was born in Flushing, Queens, graduated from Texas A&M University in 2019 with dual degrees. She was a rising star in the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers. She had contemplated a career in medicine, possibly as a doctor. But when the coronavirus struck, she decided instead to focus on how to better deliver care.

“She made the career change to become a project manager,” the society said in a statement, “seeing the need for process improvements in the health care system, especially during a pandemic.”

Ms. Chang, who lived in Katy, Texas, just west of Houston, died on April 6 of complications of Covid-19, said Khanh Vu, the chief executive and executive director of the society. She was 24.

Her parents were also infected. Her father, Chi-Kai Chang, died of the coronavirus five days later. He was 57.

It was an absurd farce. Within 24 hours, Johnson had gone from reassuring the public that schools were safe to admitting they may be “vectors for transmission”. The mass-testing capabilities that schools had built over the Christmas break, when they could have been putting their energy and resources into setting up remote learning packages, were mothballed.

But Donna was oblivious to the chaos. Late in the evening of 3 January, her organs started to fail. On 6 January, Donna’s family got the call they had been dreading. “I wanted to hold her hand,” Steph says. “She wasn’t going on her own.” Vicki, Steph and Donna’s father were allowed to visit. They felt that Donna wasn’t in that sterile hospital room, but had already left her body. “I said: ‘Let’s do it. Put her at peace.’”

Steph and Vicki each took their sister’s hand. Their father held their hands. Doctors turned off the ventilator. “I lost Donna the minute they put her on the ventilator,” says Vicki. “When they rang up to say she wasn’t responding and her organs were failing, it was like someone just shot me. They tore my heart out that night.” After 10 minutes, at 8.45am, Donna died. Steph, Vicki and their father embraced, collected her things and went home.
