Amnesty International reinstates Navalny’s ‘prisoner of conscience’ status — Meduza

Amnesty International has decided to re-designated jailed Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny as a “prisoner of conscience.”

The human rights organization initially recognized Navalny as a “prisoner of conscience” when he was arrested upon returning to Russia in January 2021. It rescinded this status in February on the grounds that Navalny’s past statements about migrants from Central Asia and the North Caucasus constitute hate speech.

In a statement released on May 7, Amnesty International wrote that “the Russian government and its supporters used that internal decision, which we had not intended to make public, to further violate Navalny’s rights.” This prompted Amnesty to undertake a review of its overall approach to granting “prisoner of conscience” status.

COVID Vaccines Are Safe and Effective | NeuroLogica Blog

Meanwhile, there is a dedicated band of anti-vaxxers actively spreading lies and misinformation about the COVID vaccines to the public. It’s as if they are trying to kill as many people as possible. Much of this information is coming from just 12 people – the usual anti-vax suspects, like Mercola and RFK Jr. It shows how much power a lone crank can now have given the amplification of social media. Their claims are all nonsense, but they have to be repeatedly debunked.

David Gorski has been primarily taking on this task at SBM – you can find his recent posts on COVID anti-vaxxers here. Mainstream medical outlets have also been trying to put out the flames, such as the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins. To quickly summarize:

  • mRNA vaccines do not rewrite your DNA. They don’t even get into the nucleus of the cell.
  • They do not permanently create viral protein. The mRNA only lasts 10-14 days.
  • They do not shed spike proteins that can affect the unvaccinated
  • They do not cause spontaneous abortion or infertility
  • The science was not rushed – only the regulatory process was streamlined so that multiple steps could be taken simultaneously.
  • mRNA technology is not new, it has been around for decades. These are just the first mRNA vaccines.

« Eles se esqueceram rapidamente da beleza da floresta! »

Barbara Crane Navarro

«Eles começaram a arrancar avidamente os minerais do solo.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) on Thursday blasted the politicization of protective face masks that has occurred during the coronavirus pandemic.

“The politicization around masks, I think history is going to write as one of the worst things that’s happened to this country,” Walz said at a press conference, according to WCCO-TV.

“I think it cost lives,” he said of the pushback against masks by those who view them as a political statement. “I think it’s stupid. It’s the least intrusive thing we can do.”

Pope: God doesn’t distinguish between natives, foreigners – The Washington Post

Pope Francis on Thursday denounced “aggressive” nationalism that rejects migrants, and said Catholics should follow the Gospel-mandated call for an inclusive, welcoming church that doesn’t distinguish between “natives and foreigners, residents and guests.”

Francis made the appeal in his annual message for migrants and refugees. He said the current pandemic had shown how the concept of the human family had been “fragmented, wounded and disfigured,” with the poorest and most marginalized paying the highest price.

The universal “we,” he said, “is crumbling and cracking due to myopic and aggressive forms of nationalism and radical individualism.”
