We Hold These Truths To Be Self-Evident

Like many things, most people do not educate themselves on things until they have a need to know.  In September 2018, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  After biopsy, I was told that the cancer cells were Her 2 positive, which qualified me to receive immunology drugs Herceptin and Perjecta. I was given a book to read about breast cancer.  It contains a section on the treatment of Her 2 positive with mRNA drugs, also called immunology drugs.  There was no desire within me to know anything about how the drugs were developed or how long they had been used.  All I knew is that treatment was not optional for me.  I wanted and still want to live.

That was my first knowledge of mRNA science.  mRNA is not an invention.  It’s a discovery.  Messenger RNA (mRNA) was discovered centuries ago.  The motivation to use it to treat or cure…

Floating

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

This is what happens when I allow myself to take a break from the work of writing lesson plans, episode reviews, and chapters of a vision of a kinder world:

I was floating on the ceiling, again. I didn’t know how, but I felt sure that this was not the first time I’d been up, above, before. In the quiet, in the calm. The racket of shouting was gone, and so was the smell of anger, and fear.

Back up against the corner of that doorway, I’d seen the hand that reached down for me, the one that had hauled me up the last two steps as I had wearily climbed the stair case, wondering what I had done, or more likely, my step-sib had done, to provoke this latest round of rage. I had realized that somehow, in some unthinking way, my question had managed to escape my…

Sajid Javid’s advice to not ‘cower’ from Covid provokes backlash | Sajid Javid | The Guardian (Me: Boris surrounds himself with reckless jerks… this one in charge of health)

The health secretary announced on Saturday that he had made a “full recovery” from Covid-19 after falling ill eight days ago, and said: “Please, if you haven’t yet, get your jab, as we learn to live with, rather than cower from, this virus.

Jo Goodman, the co-founder of Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice, said Javid’s “comments are deeply insensitive on a number of levels”.

“Not only are they hurtful to bereaved families, implying our loved ones were too cowardly to fight the virus, but they insult all those still doing their best to protect others from the devastation this horrific virus can bring,” she said.

Swimmer sacrifices Olympics dream in stand against Myanmar’s junta | Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 | The Guardian

There are almost 1,000 athletes here for the swimming competition, which began on Saturday. Win Htet Oo is not among them. Having qualified for the 50m freestyle, Oo was ready to make his Olympic debut as Myanmar’s lone swimmer. No longer.

Oo is absent, in lockdown 8,000 kilometres away in Melbourne, after the military seized power in a coup in February. With the junta committing human rights atrocities and dismantling civilian governance – and the Myanmar Olympic Committee (MOC) among those government structures expected to fall in line – Oo felt he could not represent his nation’s flag.

Three Die After Untreatable ‘Superbug’ Fungus Infections in Two Different Cities – Slashdot

The “superbug” outbreaks were reported in a Washington, D.C, nursing home and at two Dallas-area hospitals, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. A handful of the patients had invasive fungal infections that were impervious to all three major classes of medications. “This is really the first time we’ve started seeing clustering of resistance” in which patients seemed to be getting the infections from each other, said the CDC’s Dr. Meghan Lyman… Source: Three Die After Untreatable ‘Superbug’ Fungus Infections in Two Different Cities – Slashdot
