Time Flies

Good Steven Wright joke is a plus.

“Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.”–Carl Sandburg

It’s common for people to squander the “coins” of our lives when we’re young and vital. After all, we must spend some of that “coin” in order to learn the lessons of time appreciation and budgeting. At the other extreme, it is easy to fall into the trap of trying to hoard all of one’s time out of fear of wasting it. It’s a healthy practice to intersperse strict time management with letting go of it for awhile. How long for each is a personal matter. The balance is likely to change one way or the other as we age.

Letter IX – “A Day’s Venture”

Pacific Paratrooper

Dobodura, New Guinea

At this point in time, the jungle war training had live firing and everything was becoming a bit clearer, a bit more realistic.

Major Burgess left the units temporarily to set up a jump school.  This would give the glidermen and Burgess himself an opportunity to qualify as paratroopers.  The parachutists began their glider training at Soputa airstrip that was no longer in regular use.

Você é o que você faz

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

Vivaldi first line translation: Violence is a reality that needs to be worked on daily.

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

Good People Doing Good Things — David & Linda Brown

Home run idea and implementation! Thanks for finding and posting Jill Dennison.

Filosofa's Word

It was a tough choice for this week’s good people, for I had two major candidates, and several small ones and only so much time, space, & energy.  So, I have bookmarked the ones I didn’t choose for another Wednesday!  Meanwhile, I’d like to introduce you to David and Linda Brown of Springfield, Missouri.

Back in November 2010, the couple saw a need for a drop-in center for the homeless in downtown Springfield during the early evening hours. Together with some friends, they opened one evening a week at The Front Porch, a venue in the heart of downtown. The purpose was two-fold. First, was to provide a safe place for homeless persons to get off the streets for a few hours. Second, was to build relationships and gain a firsthand understanding of homelessness.

A couple of years later, they expanded their operation, formed The Gathering Tree, and moved to…

Jamaica Update, July 27, 2021: Insults hurled, apologies not proffered, and COVID-19 fraying nerves

Petchary's Blog

The problem-plagued Olympic Games in Tokyo finally got under way, and has proved a helpful distraction for Jamaicans fretting about COVID-19 and everything else. And we had some soothing rain – although it has been a contentious week, with insults flying here, there, and everywhere. Oh, and on a personal note…our roof is still leaking. And, as I have noted in previous posts, COVID “tun up.”

Caribbean: Some exciting political news. Firstly, in Saint Lucia there was an upheaval at the July 26 general elections. The somewhat conservative Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, a former Tourism Minister, was soundly defeated after five years in office and the new Prime Minister is former Opposition Leader Philip J. Pierre, leader of the Saint Lucia Labour Party. Chastanet’s United Workers Party won only two seats (he held on to his own), and interestingly two Independent candidates won seats. He made a gracious concession speech

The rate of new infections is about twice as high in red counties as blue counties – The Washington Post

In the past two weeks, there have been about 237,000 new coronavirus cases recorded in counties that voted for President Biden last year — and 388,000 in counties that voted for Donald Trump. Adjusted for population, there have been about 126 new cases per 100,000 residents of blue counties and 278 new cases per 100,000 residents of red ones. On average, blue counties are seeing 10.2 new cases for every 100,000 residents, while red counties are seeing 19.5 new cases per 100,000 residents.
