Oregon health care workers to get COVID vaccine or be tested

Oregon health care workers will be required to be vaccinated or undergo weekly testing, Gov. Kate Brown announced Wednesday.

Officials say the new rule will apply beginning Sept. 30 — giving time for employers to prepare for implementation and for unvaccinated health care workers to become fully vaccinated.

“The more contagious delta variant has changed everything. This new safety measure is necessary to stop delta from causing severe illness among our first line of defense: our doctors, nurses, medical students, and frontline health care workers,” Brown said.

Brown directed the Oregon Health Authority to issue the new rule which applies broadly to personnel in health care settings who have direct or indirect contact with patients or infectious materials. The rule requires weekly COVID-19 testing for personnel and can be waived with proof of vaccination.

Massachusetts to require COVID-19 vaccine for all nursing home staff | TheHill

All nursing home workers in Massachusetts will be required to get fully vaccinated against COVID-19, Gov. Charlie Baker (R) announced Wednesday.

The move is an escalation of Baker’s efforts to increase the state’s vaccination rate, and marks the first statewide mandate. Nearly every hospital in Massachusetts is set to require their employees to be vaccinated.

All unvaccinated staff at the 378 skilled nursing facilities, as well as the two soldiers’ homes in the state, will have to receive a first dose of a two-dose series by Sept. 1. Enforcement will begin Oct. 10.

When Did Mandatory Vaccinations Become Common? | History News Network (Boston was first)

America had many years of experience with vaccinations. The Puritans provided for vaccinations against smallpox after an outbreak devastated New England. But immunizations weren’t required anywhere in the United States until 1809, when Boston imposed mandatory vaccination to quell recurring outbreaks of smallpox that patchy, voluntary vaccination was permitting. Subsequently, some states adopted similar legislation. Scholars Alexandra Minna Stern and Howard Markel report that incidences of smallpox markedly declined between 1802 and 1840 Source: When Did Mandatory Vaccinations Become Common? | History News Network

Boston mayor compares vaccine passports to documentation required during slavery, birtherism | TheHill

“When we are combating a deadly virus and vaccine hesitancy, this kind of rhetoric is dangerous,” City Councilor Andrea Campbell tweeted. “Showing proof of vaccination is not slavery or birtherism. We are too close to give ground to COVID. Science is science. It’s pretty simple — Vax up and mask up.”

Tyson to Workers: No Jab, No Job

Tyson Foods has become the first major food processing company to require vaccination against COVID for all employees, including floor workers.

CEO Donnie King issued an all-employees memo Aug. 3 stating that all workers must get vaccinated according to a schedule: executives by Sept. 24, other office workers by Oct. 1 and floor workers by Nov. 1. The requirement for floor workers may be subject to negotiations with unions.

Less than half of Tyson’s workforce of 56,000 has been vaccinated against COVID, the company estimates. Tyson has offered vaccinations at its plants and has paid cash incentives, which will continue, with a $200 bonus for plant workers.

“We did not take this decision lightly. We have spent months encouraging our team members to get vaccinated – today, under half of our team members are,” King wrote in the memo.

A Bombshell That Few Noticed

Filosofa's Word

Last week, we found out that the former guy had instructed then-acting-attorney general Jeffrey Rosen to “Just say the election was corrupt + leave the rest to me and the R congressmen.” I saw this headline in numerous news sites that I visit daily, and like most of the rest of you, I growled a bit, called him a few choice names, then moved on to other stories. But as Robert Reich points out … that was the wrong move. This is THE story that is most important in its implications. I’ll let Mr. Reich explain …

A Trump bombshell quietly dropped last week. And it should shock us all

Robert Reich

A newly released memo shows that Trump told the acting attorney general: ‘Just say the election was corrupt [and] leave the rest to me and the [Republican] congressmen’

We’ve become so inured to Donald Trump’s proto-fascism that we…

Cous Cous peperoni Topepo e patate

InTheNameOfSeitan

3 patate medie

2 spicchi d’aglio

Brodo vegetale

Pomodori secchi sott’olio

Noci (oppure granella di noci)

Olio Evo

Sale

Pepe

Procuriamoci dei peperoni Tepepo (ma anche dei friggitelli andranno benissimo), dell’ottimo aglio e delle patate.

Brooks pushes for immunity from Swalwell suit over January 6 | TheHill

Brooks asked the Justice Department to certify that he was acting within his official duties as a legislator when he delivered a speech on January 6, which under federal law would effectively shield him from such lawsuits. But last week, the Justice Department declined, arguing that his conduct that day appeared to be political campaigning, which does not fall under protected activity. ADVERTISEMENT “The record indicates that Brooks’s appearance at the January 6 rally was campaign activity, and it is no part of the business of the United States to pick sides among candidates in federal elections,” department lawyers wrote in their filing. One section of the Justice Department brief included the heading, “Instigating an attack on the United States Capitol would not be within the scope of a Member of Congress’s employment.”
