Why the US is parking local Afghan support staff in third countries | Asia | An in-depth look at news from across the continent | DW | 28.08.2021

Tens of thousands of US local staff have been evacuated, but so far only about 1,200 of these have actually arrived in America. The American government says Germany is just a transit country, but it is still unclear where the refugees currently waiting in Ramstein will be taken next.

The US government apparently aims to distribute as many local staff as possible to third countries around the world until their visa applications have been checked and approved. Late last week, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that 12 partner countries had already agreed to accept US local staff for this purpose: Albania, Canada, Costa Rica, Chile, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Mexico, Poland, Qatar, Rwanda, Ukraine, Uganda and Colombia.

Coronavirus in UK: Britons, Unfazed by High Covid Rates, Weigh Their ‘Price of Freedom’ – The New York Times (Me: No, sorry… it is just being stupid and those who end up dying will be killing others as they go…)

“There’s a feeling that finally we can breathe; we can start trying to get back what we’ve lost,” said Devi Sridhar, the head of the global public health program at the University of Edinburgh. “It’s really difficult to ask people not to mix for a prolonged period, especially if there is no solution.”

Sirhan Sirhan: six Kennedy children condemn decision to grant killer parole | Robert Kennedy | The Guardian

The ruling will be reviewed over 120 days then sent to the governor, who will have 30 days to decide whether to grant, reverse or modify it. If Sirhan is freed, he must live in a transitional home for six months, enroll in an alcohol abuse program and get therapy. The six Kennedy children who oppose release said they were “devastated” and appealed to the governor, Gavin Newsom, “to reverse this initial recommendation” which had “inflicted enormous initial pain”. “Sirhan Sirhan committed a crime against our nation and its people,” they said, adding: “We hope that those who also hold the memory of our father in their hearts will stand with us.”

Why Are Cops So Resistant to Getting Vaccinated? – Mother Jones

When public employees’ Facebook-meme rabbit holes make them a danger to the general welfare, the solution is not to accommodate those unfounded fears, it is to remind those employees who they are supposed to be working for. The vaccine is the simplest of steps police can take to ensure that, whatever else they might do, their literal presence is not inflicting harm, so that fewer people—and fewer cops—get sick and die from a virus that should never have killed this many. This is the absolute most basic threshold of “to serve and protect.”

Atrocious Myanmar Military at Risk of Splitting: Army Defectors

With a record-breaking number of defections unmatched in nearly six decades and brewing discontent among the ranks against their superiors, Myanmar’s more than 300,000-strong military is now at risk of splitting, according to some ex-army officers who have deserted their units recently. Currently, around 2,000 soldiers and police have joined the country’s Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), a nationwide boycott by Myanmar civil servants against the regime following their takeover in February. Many more are in the pipeline and out of the current 2,000 defectors, one-third are military personnel, said the officers who have joined the CDM as they are not pleased with the country’s military regime.

Calls Grow to Discipline Doctors Spreading Virus Misinformation Online – Slashdot

“When a doctor speaks, people pay attention,” said Dr. Humayun Chaudhry, president of the Federation of State Medical Boards. “The title of being a physician lends credibility to what people say to the general public. That’s why it is so important that these doctors don’t spread misinformation.”

Revealed: Foreign Office ignored frantic pleas to help Afghans | Afghanistan | The Guardian

“They cannot possibly know [how many people have been left behind] because they haven’t even read the emails. Even among those who’ve been registered, many have been left behind. But there’s also a much, much larger group of people who just haven’t been dealt with at all.”

The claims will heap further pressure on the Foreign Office’s handling of the evacuation process and the foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, who has been criticised for initially remaining on holiday when the Afghanistan crisis began.

Starmer said the “complacency and incompetence of this government has been exposed yet again and with tragic consequences”. He added: “The fact that so many emails have simply gone unopened is not the fault of civil servants but of government ministers who have been missing in action during this whole crisis.”
