“I have tasted freedom. I will not give up that which I have tasted.”–LGBT activist, Harvey Milk

Have you noticed certain people love their freedom so much that they actively try to suppress the liberty of others? On the other hand, have you also noticed people who love freedom so much that they do not give a care about personal responsibility? Isn’t there some sort of happy medium?

This is why I selected a quote by Harvey Milk. He devoted much of his life to the cause of freedom for the gay community and for human beings at large. He had a persistent character who inspired millions of people. Yet, in his heart, he was a free-spirit. He loved life and went for the gusto. Milk understood that he could not retain freedom if others could not exercise their freedom. He was not a pristine, pure soul, but then who…

Laos’ High School Graduates Flocking to Chinese Studies in University — Radio Free Asia

Recent high school graduates in Laos are increasingly opting to study Chinese at university in hopes of finding better employment, indicating that the country’s youth feel that Laos’s future lies with Beijing, students told RFA.

Chinese investment in Laos was a mere 1.5 percent of its total foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2003, but Beijing accounted for 79 percent of FDI in Laos in 2018. The sharp rise in investment has prompted job hunters in Laos to view proficiency in the Chinese language as an essential skill.

A student who graduated from a high school in the capital Vientiane told RFA’s Lao Service that students are flocking to the Chinese language major because they believe that after graduation it will be easier to find a high-paying job, and that most businesses will need workers who can speak Chinese.

Enhancing biodiversity through the belly: Agroecology comes alive in Chile

Agroecology, the practice of ecological principles in farming, is coming to life in a corner of Chile through different faces and practices. Like individual bees working toward a common, greater goal, practitioners of agroecology tend have a positive multiplication effect in their territory. From food producers to beekeepers to chefs, these practitioners show that scaling up agroecology requires deconstructing implicit knowledge hierarchies, a disposition to learning continuously, and sharing through horizontal networks.

Bascilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle is a National Shrine in Texas

Roadtirement

The Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle is a remarkable place in the Rio Grande Valley. The Basilica has a fascinating history that traces back to the 1600’s in Mexico with a reported miracle. The current location has been the sight for pilgrimages for decades.

The Sanctuary

Sher and I decided to go to the Basilica on a Sunday for mass. The Sunday schedule has masses all day, with Spanish, English and bi-lingual. There is a mariachi band providing the music on Saturday and Sunday masses. We opted for the 3 o’clock English mass. The mass was very inspiring.

When we arrived, the 1 o’clock mass had not yet let out, and the parking lots were very full. I was able to find a handicapped spot. The complex has…

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!
