How a day for truth and reconciliation inspired these Indigenous artists | CBC News

CBC Saskatchewan reached out to Indigenous artists across the province to commission original works for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Thursday — asking them to create something based on whatever the day inspired in them.

The day, which is being marked as a federal statutory holiday for the first time this year, is intended to recognize the painful legacy and ongoing impacts of the residential school system, and to honour survivors and the children who died while attending the schools.

Here is what the artists created, and what the pieces mean to them in their own words.

Protesters against old-growth logging dig in as company appeals denial of court injunction | CBC News

All sides in the old-growth logging dispute dug in deeper Wednesday after a British Columbia Supreme Court judge refused to extend an injunction against protest blockades on southern Vancouver Island. On Wednesday, forest company Teal Cedar Products Ltd. filed to appeal the decision handed down Justice Douglas Thompson on Tuesday.  “To do otherwise would be to allow anarchy to reign over civil society, and for misinformation campaigns to win over fact,” a company statement read.  The logging company said if it cannot continue its work, it may be forced to lay off employees and shut down mills.

Flight carrying Americans from Kabul departs UAE bound for US – The Jerusalem Post

A group of American citizens and lawful permanent residents evacuated to the United Arab Emirates from Afghanistan flew out of the Gulf state bound for the United States on Thursday, the country’s foreign ministry said, after being temporarily held up for vetting.
The Department of Homeland Security had denied US landing rights for a charter plane carrying more than 100 evacuees, said organizers of that earlier flight — one of several that emerged from ad hoc networks that formed to bolster last month’s chaotic evacuation operation from Afghanistan.
But the State Department said on Wednesday that more than 100 US citizens and lawful permanent residents evacuated to Abu Dhabi from Afghanistan aboard the charter flight were expected to fly on to the United States on Thursday.

Once upon a time in a kingdom, the king suffered pain in his eyes.

Many different doctors visited him but none of them were able to cure the king’s pain.

The King’s right-hand minister suggested: “There is a wise man in the Kingdom who knows everything, let him visit you.”

The king agreed and they brought the wise man to visit the king.

The wise man said: “If you see everything in green, your pain will stop eventually and your eyes will be cured.”

The king ordered every wall of his palace to be painted green. The king’s pain in his eyes was getting better exactly as the wise man promised.

The king ordered everyone to wear green. He asked for all the dishes, table cloths, furniture, curtains; every possible thing in the palace to be changed to green.
