World AIDS Day in Jamaica: lighting a candle after 30 years
As I wait for the virtual Annual Candlelight Vigil to emerge from Zoom-land, I indulge in some memories. If I was to use that well worn cliché, I would call them “bittersweet.” For several years during the 1990s, I attended these vigils on the front lawn of what was then the headquarters of Jamaica AIDS Support for Life(JASL). These were emotional occasions. As the names of those who had died from AIDS during the year were read out, there were tears – sometimes loudly expressed, at other times soft and quiet. They were very personal moments for many. And the list in those days was quite unbearably long.

The old house that was JASL’s office was knocked down some years ago. It has been replaced by one of the cold, characterless apartment blocks that are going up all over the jaded, overcrowded, and over-trafficked neighborhood just north of New…

Russian Man Sentenced for Providing ‘Bulletproof Hosting’ for Cybercriminals | OPA | Department of Justice
Grichishkin also helped clients evade detection by law enforcement and continue their crimes uninterrupted by monitoring sites used to blocklist technical infrastructure used for crime, moving “flagged” content to new infrastructure, and registering all such infrastructure under false or stolen identities. On June 28 and Oct. 20, respectively, Chief Judge Hood sentenced two of Grichishkin’s co-conspirators, Pavel Stassi, 30, of Estonia, to 24 months in prison and Aleksandr Skorodumov, 33, of Lithuania, to 48 months in prison for their roles in the scheme…

128 LA Fire Department Employees Are Being Sent Home For Defying City’s Vaccination Mandate | LAist
Los Angeles Fire Department employees who are unvaccinated, haven’t applied for an exemption, and refuse regular testing are being taken off duty. So far, that’s at least 128 employees who are mostly firefighters. They can use banked vacation time, but they will not get a salary. LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas says continued refusal to comply could result in termination. But there are people to fill the openings, including fire academy graduates. In a memo to staff, Terrazas says some staffers are encouraging colleagues “to be insubordinate when they are notified of their off duty status.” “You can have an opinion as long as you do it off duty. But on duty, you’re working, and you are a public servant,” Terrazas wrote. “And I expect you to carry out our mission to protect the lives and property of the people of Los Angeles.” The department is investigating an incident during which a firefighter allegedly wiped himself with a notice about the vaccination mandate. Some firefighters are suing over it. Currently, 82% of LAFD employees are vaccinated, according to Terrazas.
