Carbon capture in Iowa

LANDBACK Friends

There is an ancient Lakota prophecy about a black snake that would slither across the land, desecrating the sacred sites and poisoning the water before destroying the Earth.

The following Includes remarks by my friends Sikowis Nobiss (Great Plains Action Society), Lee Tesdell, Ed Fallon (Bold Iowa).

Great Plains Action Society

December2at4:16PM

Great Plains Action Society is firmly opposed to so-called carbon capture and sequestration or storage (CCS) projects such as the proposed Summit Midwest Carbon Express. ⁣⁣

The reasons for our opposition are numerous, however, our greatest concern is that CCS only serves the interests of the fossil fuel industry. Carbon capture and sequestration is by design a way to prolong the usage of fossil fuels while reducing CO2 emissions. Amidst this climate emergency we must demand a reduction and phasing out of fossil fuels as a wider part of a just transition. ⁣⁣

We are also concerned…

Parashat MiKetz, and Reverse Engineering

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

This week’s Torah portion is  Parashat MiKetz, and Joseph shows how to start From the End, and plan ahead.  Also known as the process of reverse, or backward, engineering to solve a problem based on the needed outcome, or in this case, the known resource shortage.  Mary Jackson also engineered solutions, also starting from a position of being less respected, like Joseph.  Like Tamar, in last week’s parashah, she had to be daring and resourceful.   Undoubtedly, she drew on resources from the public library system.   She, like both Tamar and Joseph, showed us how to solve problems in the face of adversity.   So, how do we help to build this skill into our entire population,   Thoughtful Readers?

Action Prompts:

1.)  Share your thoughts on the long term how problem-solving  education might help keep all of us safer, please.

2.) …

Illegal gold mines operate unchecked in Myanmar’s Kachin state since coup — Radio Free Asia

Illegal gold mine operations have run unchecked in the capital of Myanmar’s Kachin state since the military seized power 10 months ago, raising concerns for villagers who spent years protesting a massive Chinese-backed dam project in the early 2000s.

Local sources along the Irrawaddy River in Kachin recently told RFA’s Myanmar Service that illegal gold mining operations began in earnest only weeks after the military’s Feb. 1 coup. They said they fear the unregulated activities could damage the waterway and the surrounding environment.

A resident who gave her name as Laura said that a gold mining operation in Myitsone is situated at a riverbend where the current is extremely strong. She said the mining impacts the integrity of the banks and could lead the river to change course during the rainy season, flooding nearby Tanphare village.

“Gold mining with the use of all this heavy machinery shouldn’t be done here. If they continue to mine like this, our Myitsone scenery will be lost forever,” she said.

“Tanphare village may also have flooding issues. I’m very much worried that we would lose all of our beautiful natural environment.”

Gold miners are dredging the Irrawaddy to collect the mineral from the riverbed, dumping the silt and wastewater back into the waterway and causing serious pollution, sources said.

Barbara Crane Navarro

Madeira: Monte Palace Madeira … same in English

Stella, oh, Stella

… My remark to this park: extremely beautiful, I could live in that park. The little town of Monte is enthroned on a hill high above Funchal. You can get there on a narrow, winding road, or with the new teleferic. We drove there with our leased car. The drive alone is an adventure. I have taken historical facts about the park from its own website (Portuguese and English) and will insert it between the photos, marked with…
