India Cities Ban Eggs, Drawing a Backlash – The New York Times

The place of the humble egg in the street food culture of Gujarat, a state in western India where people take their snacks seriously, has become the latest flash point in the growing role of religion in everyday life. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has a Hindu nationalist base, the national government has taken steps in recent years to promote the religion and to sideline Muslims and other groups.

Emboldened local governments have followed suit, enacting rules in some places that adhere closely to Hindu doctrine. That is especially true in Gujarat, which Mr. Modi led for 13 years before becoming prime minister and which is often seen as a laboratory for pushing policies to reshape India along his Hindu nationalist vision. Those include tightening a ban on alcohol and adding protections against the slaughter of cattle, which many Hindus consider sacred.

But even devout Hindus don’t always agree among themselves what practices the faithful should follow, a conflict that also raises issues of income and class. Hence the bitter disagreement over eggs.

APO Group – Africa Newsroom / Press release | Ghanaian doctor wins globally recognised award for his work on river blindness

Professor Daniel Adjei Boakye, a doctor who has devised a project to map out how river blindness is transmitted between villages in the Oti region has won a Falcon Award for Disease Elimination. The five winners were announced yesterday by the Global Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE) during a Universal Health Coverage Day event at EXPO 2020 Dubai.

Professor Boakye will carry out a series of targeted field studies in the Oti Region to refine the multi-village model for preventing river blindness and identify the best treatment strategies for the disease.

Results from the study will also help in redefining transmission zones for other neglected tropical diseases programmes, ensuring these zones are targeted with specific interventions to accelerate the elimination of diseases.

🎄 Holly, Jolly Monday 🎅🏾

Filosofa's Word

Good Monday morn, friends!  Less than two weeks now until Christmas … I’ve done all my shopping online this year, as I’ve not been well enough to go out shopping, and the girls are doing all my wrapping, as well as the holiday baking.  I’m determined to roast a turkey with all the trimmings for us to share with our dear friends the al-Dabbaghs on Christmas, but more and more I think that may be an unreasonable goal to set for myself.  Well, I’ve got two weeks to whip myself into shape, so we’ll see.  But for today, Jolly ‘n Joyful and I have some fun things to help you start this week with a smile, or perhaps even a chuckle or a giggle!  So, grab a snack and a cuppa something warm to drink and let’s find some fun, shall we?

What say we start the morning with a…

Covid and the Economy — CRAIN’S COMMENTS

Josh Hausman, writing in The Atlantic magazine, has provided data to support an argument that I have long felt to be true: The workforce in the US has shrunk in response to Covid. Separate from the day-to-day toll of ongoing infections, COVID shrank the labor force, which was more than 2 million smaller in November […]

Wisconsin Republicans Introduce Bill Authorizing Sandhill Crane Hunt | Sierra Club (Me: Killing is what they do best and like to do… just because…)

In October, state senate Republicans introduced S.B. 620, which would require Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to establish a sandhill crane hunting season. If passed, the bill could spell disaster for the Eastern Population of greater sandhill cranes.

Sandhill cranes are an ancient species with fossil records dating back at least 2.5 million years. In the 18th and 19thcenturies, overhunting and habitat destruction nearly caused the Eastern Population to become extinct. In the 1930s, Wisconsin was down to an estimated 15 breeding pairs; the birds had already disappeared from five other states: Illinois, Iowa, South Dakota, Ohio, and Indiana. Through concerted conservation efforts, the population has slowly increased over the past 70 years. In 2020, the US Fish and Wildlife Service estimated that Eastern Population number at nearly 95,000, with nearly half the population in Wisconsin.

Proponents of the hunt claim that there are now too many birds and that the hunt should be part of an overall management strategy. Senator Mary Felzkowski, who sponsored S.B. 620, argues that because the Wisconsin sandhill crane population is no longer endangered, “it’s time now to manage that resource, just as we do with all our other waterfowl and birds.”

Another backer, Bruce Ross, the executive director of the Wisconsin Waterfowl Association (WWA), says his organization would like to see “an ethical and sustainable sandhill crane hunt in Wisconsin” that is “science-based.” But in crafting the bill, Republicans failed to consult expert groups such as the Wisconsin Conservation Congress, the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, the Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission, or even the DNR. The International Crane Foundation (ICF), the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology (WSO), the Madison Audubon Society, and the Green-Rock Audubon Society have come out against the bill.
