Review of Mindhunter, and Thinking on Abolition
Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better
I would like to hear your thoughts, Thoughtful Readers, on the idea of Project Do Better as what Professor Ruth Wilson Gilmore said of some striking teachers, that “this is also abolition work.” I’ve been thinking of her partly because I think that our goals are nearly identical, but fear being identified as a radical. The other reason I’ve been thinking of prisons is that someone recently thanked me for my service, at the US Naval Academy (though I served more usefully imho, as a cadet in the CAP and Jr. ROTC, by rendering first aid after a Metro bus accident!!). That reminded me of an overheard conversation in my senior year of high school. As I was nearing graduation, contemplating Annapolis, two guys in my class were also discussing their options. One said “three hots and a cot.” The other said “hospital, prison, military.” Then they both…

Čoko-oblande – Choco-wafers
Vrijeme pripreme: 60 minuta
- jedno pakovanje oblandi
- 500 g šećera
- 500 ml vode
- 100 g čokolade
- 250 g margarina
- 1 kesica vanilin šećera
- 4 kašike brašna
- rendana kora pomorandže ili kašika kandirane pomorandže
- 200 g čokolade
- kašika ulja
- kašika mlijeka
U 100 ml hladne vode dodajte brašno i vanilin šećer i dobro izmiješajte.

We The People Are Losing Our Voice
When I read this newsletter from Robert Reich this morning, my jaw dropped. Sure, I knew that capitalism has run amok in recent years and that We the People seem to have no value to many of our elected officials, but … even I wasn’t aware to what degree our best interests have been subjugated. I hope you’ll take a couple of minutes to read and ponder Mr. Reich’s words …
Why isn’t corporate America behind the pro-democracy movement?
Time for the biggest companies to step up and protect what’s left of it
Robert Reich, 14 January 2022
Capitalism and democracy are compatible only if democracy is in the driver’s seat.
That’s why I took some comfort just after the attack on the Capitol when many big corporations solemnly pledged they’d no longer finance the campaigns of the 147 lawmakers who voted to overturn the election results.
Well, those days…

The Most important Country in the World: Djibouti
Best wishes for the people of Djibouti! I only spent a day there, long ago, as we transited north through the canal but it made as big an impression on me as Alexandria or Casablanca.
For my first blog post of the year, I want to do a tale about a small country called Djibouti. If you have been to my blog before you must be familiar with the horn of Africa by now, a region east of the African continent that is made of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, and Djibouti the subject of this specific blog. Before we get into the depth of this I want you to take your time and look at this map and take it in.

Djibouti is one of the smallest countries on the planet, but it’s also arguably the most important. Like all other countries in the horn of Africa Djibouti has a rich history going back thousands of years, meaning it has a rich culture. Just like its neighbors Ethiopia in the South West, Eritrea in the North, and Somalia in the South the country is one of…
