Filosofa's Word

I haven’t posted music posts much of late … actually only one or two in the last 4-5 months, I think … but today, February 3rd, cried out for me to post one.  Why, you ask?  Because it was 63 years ago today that a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa took the lives of 22-year-old Buddy Holly, 17-year-old Ritchie Valens, and 28-year-old J. P. Richardson, aka: “The Big Bopper” as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson.

Buddy Holly’s band was on tour and had played at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake.  They were headed to their next destination in Moorhead, Minnesota.  For this leg of their journey, they decided to take a charter plane rather than go with their tour bus. Richardson “The Big Bopper”,  had swapped places with Waylon Jennings, taking the latter’s place…

My favorite quotes (two) bring me energy and calm

Petchary's Blog

OK, so I did mention that I am way behind on Bloganuary (now on the January 22 prompt!) but I am ploughing on into February – because I do like the prompts and enjoy writing about something a little different from the norm.

However, when we were asked to write about our favorite quote (yes! just one!) I thought that it just had to be two…

Firstly, the one that gives me energy, hope and inspiration, from one of my heroes, Dr. Jane Goodall. There are so many of hers – about respect for living things; about empathy and compassion; about decision-making and about taking action. It is the last part that inspires me the most:

The illegal Brazilian gold you may be wearing – BBC News

A special task force in Brazil is conducting raids deep in the Amazon, in a new crack-down against what they call ‘blood gold’ mining.

Mining in territories that are supposed to be protected by law is destroying the lives of indigenous people, and wreaking havoc on the environment.

The UK is the third biggest buyer of Brazilian gold, and public prosecutors have alleged that 30% of Brazil’s exports may be illegally mined.

The BBC was given exclusive access to film a rare special forces operation. The identities of some of the operatives have been protected.

US COVID-19 cases drop, but hospitalizations in unvaccinated still high | CIDRAP

Unvaccinated 14 times at risk of death

“Hospitalizations remain high, and deaths also remain quite high,” Walensky said, before she detailed data on how and if vaccination status was linked to current hospitalizations.

Walensky said the latest data on the Omicron wave show the unvaccinated were at a 14-times-greater risk from dying from COVID-19 than vaccinated and boosted peers. She also said 54% of those currently hospitalized for COVID-19 in the United States were unvaccinated.

“People currently hospitalized for COVID-19 are disproportionately unvaccinated and unboostered,” she said.
