February 3rd – Shingles Vaccine

Seclusion 101 with AnneMarie

Looking back at previous blogs that I have posted, I came across this one regarding my run in with shingles.

https://seclusion101withannemarie.com/2019/10/29/shingles-vaccine/

Since I wrote this we have had global debate and debacle over vaccines. I understand this, but still felt this post was worthy of update.

While you may be reluctant to get the vaccine for shingles (or anything else right now) I would like to share a bit more information on shingles.

1) Anyone who has had chicken pox, regardlessof age, can get shingles. When I had shingles, and in the weeks after, I heard horror stories from people of all ages, who had experienced this horrid condition.

2) Shingles can erupt anywhere on one’s body. I had it on my face and scalp (particularly nasty as it can cause loss of sight, hearing, and permanent disfigurement). I heard of people experiencing outbreaks on their shoulder, back…

Beau takes on book banning

A few days ago I wrote a post about the recent trend in some states of banning books that educators or parents felt made the children ‘uncomfortable’.  Such books as Ruby Bridges Goes to School and books about Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King have been banned in addition to numerous Pulitzer Prize-winning and classic books like Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.  But the book that triggered my post was a comic book titled Maus, about the Holocaust.

Interestingly, I decided to purchase Maus, in part to support the book and its author, and in part because I want to read it now, to see if I can figure out what all the hoopla is about.  But, guess what?  Amazon and Barnes & Noble are both sold out of the book.  I found…

The Cost of Resisting Vaccination

CRAIN'S COMMENTS

The unvaccinated create several issues for their neighbors and society as a whole:

  1. The fill up hospitals, depriving others of needed access. Need a surgery? You can’t get it at your local hospital if every bed is taken. Can you afford to travel for it?
  2. They drive up medical costs. In September, Forbes reported that unvaccinated people created an extra $5.7 billion in medical spending between June and September of last year.(1)
    1. Guess who gets to pay for that? You do, through taxes and higher health insurance premiums.
    2. Yes, seniors got the highest cost-of-living increase this year from Social Security, but the companion increase in Medicare costs absorbed almost all of it for most people.
  3. They form a human petri dish in which the virus can create new mutations.
  4. They become disabled or die, adding to worker shortages that are driving up the price of everything in the US.

While…

Rising incidence of multiple sclerosis — CRAIN’S COMMENTS

This isn’t a coronavirus post, but it is about a virus. You may have heard of multiple sclerosis. It’s devastating, and the drugs to treat the disease are absurdly expensive (think $6,000 per dose and requiring three per week). NIH provides a formal definition: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system. […]

Justice Department and U.S. Department of Agriculture Launch Online Tool Allowing Farmers, Ranchers to Report Anticompetitive Practices | OPA | Department of Justice

Today, the U.S. Departments of Justice and Agriculture (USDA) launched farmerfairness.gov, a new online tool that allows farmers and ranchers to anonymously report potentially unfair and anticompetitive practices in the livestock and poultry sectors. The launch of the new portal will advance the goals of Biden-Harris Administration’s Action Plan for a Fairer, More Competitive, and More Resilient Meat and Poultry Supply Chain, including by creating more competitive agricultural markets that are fairer to producers and consumers. As part of the agencies’ enforcement partnership, the agencies are signing an interagency memorandum of understanding to further foster cooperation and communication between the agencies and effectively process the complaints received through the portal.
