Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better
The common good, or the general welfare, requires a willingness to dig beneath the surface for the full facts, in order to form a more perfect and inclusive union for all of us.
Someone who told me just this morning that NY City did not, in fact, have it’s hospital system overrun by Covid in the spring, missed a crucial fact. When she asserted that the Mercy had 1100 beds, which went unused, and thus NY city’s hospital system did not collapse in March or April of this year, I replied that there must be more to the story than meets the eye. She continued to insist that non-Covid deaths are being labeled as Covid for some nefarious reason, and that the hospital systems there and in LA are just fine, since someone she knew went to the hospital (in San Diego) two weeks ago, and reported seeing only three…

Parashat Tetzaveh, and Inequality?
Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better
This week’s Torah portion is Parashat Tetzaveh.
This is the 20th annual cycle parashah, and the 8th in the book of Sh’mot/Exodus.
This week, everyone will hear something about the Cohanim, or the priesthood. This is a holdover from a time in human history when the rule of law needed to be reinforced via mysticism. There is more to it, but this is the key to our current societal need to build empathy and respect for one another: hierarchy has its uses, but by this time, we human beings have the tools to build an egalitarian and respectful society that is kind to all.
We can Do Better.

Alphabet soup for the soul vol.2 –“S”
S is for Surrender
“When we surrender, we open to more possibilities than we can even visualize or imagine for ourselves” -Kute Blackson-
Life is a journey and the best way is to experience is to surrender and let go. Expect nothing and accept everything.
Last year, I chose surrender as the theme of my year.
I can not begin to tell you how many amazing things happened when I surrendered. There were many times when I didn’t want to or didn’t feel like doing something but I reminded myself to surrender and that is always when the magic occurs.
When we make our plan but then surrender the outcome, we have done our part in the creation process.
Maybe it happens the way we want and maybe it does not, but we can stand tall with our head held high knowing that we dideverything we could do and let…

Blackbird singing in the dead of night – a Paul McCartney encore
I wrote the following post about six years ago. Sadly, it is even more relevant today with efforts to hyper-politicize issues to garner votes under the guise of critical race theory, book banning and strategic voter suppression.
The title is from a line of The Beatles song “Blackbird” which is a tribute to the struggle for African-Americans for their civil rights. The song was sung by Paul McCartney with writing credits to both him and John Lennon, although McCartney was the lead.
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free
Blackbird…
