Right Before Hurricane, These Republicans Voted AGAINST FEMA Funding | Diane Ravitch’s blog

The hypocrisy of Republicans is astounding. Right before Hurricane Helena devastated parts of Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee, Congress voted on nearly $20 billion in funding for FEMA.

Every Democratic member of Congress voted for fully funding FEMA. Large numbers of Republicans voted NAY, including some from the states hit hardest by Helene.

Newsweek reported:

As Hurricane Helene careened toward Florida’s Panhandle, numerous Republicans voted against extending funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Last week, Congress approved $20 billion for FEMA’s disaster relief fund as part of a stopgap spending bill to fund the government through December 20. But the measure left out billions of dollars in requested supplemental disaster funding.

The Senate approved the measure by a 78-18 vote on September 25 after it passed the House in a 341-82 vote. Republicans supplied the no votes in both chambers.

Some of the Republicans who voted against the bill represent states that have been hard hit by Helene, including Florida Representative Matt Gaetz.

These are the [100]Republicans who voted NO to FEMA funding. Note how many come from states that were hit hard by the hurricane:

Who’s Bad? 🥊 | From Behind the Pen

Since social media has gained popularity over the last 15 years, and more social media channels have come on the scene, some people feel they have carte blanche to say whatever comes to their minds, no matter how insensitive and offensive it may be. While I tend to be limited in my time spent on certain social media sites, I think about the war of words that takes place throughout the internet without a filter.

It seems like folks get so caught up in the moment and become short-tempered, angry, and confrontational if they oppose certain things or people who do not align with their beliefs. It seems like it gets crazier every day, especially during an election season. I immediately think about Michael Jackson’s song Bad and how some outrageous online confrontations play out in my head. Thank goodness no one can read my mind. I wonder if verbal abusers ever think about who their audience is, including their children, another relative, or a neighbor who overhears their spews of insults and hatred.

Growing up my mother used to say to me when I responded to verbal attacks with more venom than the other person, “Be careful what you say, because once your words become airborne, you can’t take those words back, no matter how much of an apology you give.” Well, her words never left me and echo in my head to this day. Yes, I still heed her words of wise advice, and they have been a saving grace for me, publically and privately. But then there are those moments of infuriation, when I think about those poetic words echoed before a fistfight back in the day, “Your ass is grass and I am the lawn mower!” It’s not always my proudest moment, but given the circumstances doggone it, it sure as hell felt good.

A few decades ago, I remember a conversation that a parishioner had with my brother-in-law, where he was the pastor. He told her to pray about a heated exchange she had with another parishioner. Her response was quite comical. She said, “Pastor, prayer is alright in prayer meetings, but in bear meetings, you gotta kick some ass!” That was one time my brother-in-law had no words of spiritual wisdom to use as a bargaining chip to reason with.

Think before you speak, to lower the temperature, because you never know who is listening, evaluating, or meditating on what you said. Some words can come back to haunt you, just when you don’t need them to. I’m still a work in progress. Be cautious!
