The home economics of child labour | openDemocracy

A lot of the households and families we meet are in difficult circumstances. Most are unemployed or, even where they have jobs, things are not going well. They are trying their best to put food on the table and ensure their children go to school but there is no support for them to achieve this. As a result the whole family must work together as farm labourers or in other jobs to make ends meet.

The children are supposed to be in school and, now that education is free in Ghana, it is easy to blame such families for breaking the law. But in reality we are just blaming them for being poor. We have to face reality and admit that unless we increase support for such families, child labour will not go away no matter how hard we preach against it.

penned in moon dust

It was a quiet and cold drive back to Odessa and neither of us wanted to say what we were feeling.

“We would be smart to get some food for a reserve supply and candles.” My husband got very chatty as we got to the edge of Odessa.

“We have one blanket but I think several more would be a good idea if the power goes off.”

Neither of us said, “Let’s just go home.”

It’s as if something was holding us in Odessa even though the signs were clear that war was coming.

“I’d really like to find the blue room.” I told my husband.

“They said there is no such room.”

“There is and it is a good size if the children have to come stay. There are no windows.”

“Then we will ask again tomorrow.” My husband collapsed from our long drive.

Before I fell asleep, I…

What Really Matters?

Filosofa's Word

A woman on Facebook bemoans that she had to ‘settle for’ ground beef to make a meatloaf instead of the ‘lovely steak dinner’ she had planned.  Another complains that there will be no beach vacation this year because “who can afford it with the price of everything, including gas, so high?”  And still another threatens to quit his job so he can “live off welfare and get food stamps like everybody else”.  And my response to all of these and more who are bitching about inflation and the price at the pump is simple:  STFU … SHUT UP!!!

Inflation and rising fuel prices are everywhere, not just in the U.S.  They are not the fault of President Biden or of teachers teaching Critical Race Theory or of the COVID vaccine or mask mandates.  They are a direct result of the war Russian Dictator Vladimir Putin started when he…

TracFone Wireless to Pay $13.4 Million to Settle False Claims Relating to FCC’s Lifeline Program | OPA | Department of Justice

The United States alleged that between 2012 and 2015, TracFone, a telecommunications carrier based in Miami, impermissibly signed up more than 175,000 subscribers who were ineligible for the program. TracFone hired independent third-party sales agents, including agents hired by Elite Promotional Marketing Inc. (Elite), to enroll these customers. These agents learned that TracFone’s computer software contained a glitch that allowed ineligible persons to enroll in Lifeline. Some agents in Florida then exploited the glitch to increase their consumer enrollments and commission payments. The government alleged that TracFone failed to adequately review the applications and did not properly investigate reports of clearly ineligible subscribers enrolled in the program that would have revealed the glitch. After TracFone eventually discovered the software glitch in August 2015, it repaid more than $10.9 million to Lifeline, an amount that was credited as part of the $13.4 million settlement.

“Lifeline providers have a duty to ensure that only eligible subscribers are enrolled in the Lifeline Program,” said Deputy Assistant Attorney General Michael D. Granston of the Civil Division’s Commercial Litigation Branch. “Today’s settlement demonstrates our commitment to ensure that those participating in government funded programs exercise appropriate vigilance to prevent the misuse of taxpayer dollars.”
