Thai Iced Tea — Tanooki Homemade Cafe

Happy National Iced Tea Day! It’s going to be over 80F here in my neighbor today, so it’s a perfect day to brew some tea this morning and prepare for a pleasant afternoon tea time.    As for iced tea, I love black tea like darjeeling, oolong tea, or fruit tea like raspberry tea, but […]

Economic Headwinds or Politics? (Update)

CRAIN'S COMMENTS

There are more signs that the US is heading into a recession:

  • Layoffs in digital advertising. Despite job growth overall, the number of jobs in online advertising has actually shrunk this year in absolute numbers.

Advertising and public relations lost 2,400 jobs in May despite an overall increase in US employment, per the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, a sign that the industry is beginning to wade through a period of uncertainty that will define the rest of 2022.(1)

  • Social media platforms are showing remarkable declines in advertising revenue. Facebook had the worst quarter in Q1 since going public a decade ago.(2) That has led to a company-wide hiring freeze for the remainder of 2022.
  • New business formation has been declining since mid 2021.(3) The current bright spot and exception is California, which is leading the nation in new business formation.

  • College enrollment is declining, which is going to particularly…

♫ Let It Be ♫ (Redux)

Filosofa's Word

Yesterday when I played Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel, two readers mentioned this song in comments as being similarly comforting in trying times such as we are going through today.  I have played it only once before, in 2019, so I figured it’s time for a redux!

At the time of its release in 1970, this Beatles tune had the highest debut on the Billboard Hot 100, beginning its chart run at #6. It was written and sung by Paul McCartney and was their final single before McCartney announced his departure from the band.

McCartney said he had the idea of Let It Be after he had a dream about his mother during the tense period surrounding the sessions for The Beatles aka the White Album in 1968. According to McCartney, the song’s reference to “Mother Mary” was not biblical. McCartney explained that his mother – who…

Brain Overload And The January 6th Hearings

Filosofa's Word

The human brain is a marvel … it really is.  But, it is not capable of processing the enormous amounts of detritus we’re putting into it these days without consequences.  Continuing to overload our central system will … not might, WILL … lead to at the very least a meltdown, at worst, well … I’ll leave that to your imagination.  We need a respite, but how?  People say to me, “Oh, I tuned out all the news long ago and I just focus on things that make me happy.”  A lovely sentiment, I suppose, if you can do it.  Personally, I cannot.  Nor do I think that those who do that for an extended period of time are being good citizens, nor a valuable part of society.  Oh sure, it’s fine to take a break for a day here and there … we all do it, even me.  Yes…
