Facebook removes posts about abortion pills in US | News | DW | 29.06.2022

On Monday, the Associated Press reported on the discrepancy in how Facebook treats abortion pills and illegal drugs. Meta, Facebook’s parent company, replied to the report, saying the company had “discovered some instances of incorrect enforcement and are correcting these,” according to company spokesperson Andy Stone.

By Wednesday, Facebook was still blocking posts about abortion pills.

When posting from an account located in Atlanta, Georgia, “Looking to get abortion pills mailed to my PO Box. Please DM,” the post was removed within less than 30 seconds, DW found. A message said the request violated Facebook’s community standards on regulated goods. Abortion is legal in the state of Georgia up to the 22nd week of pregnancy.

A test from the same account that asked the same question but about the drug MDMA rather than abortion pills averted censorship requirements.

Crypto Crash Widens Divide Between Rich and Amateur Traders – The New York Times

crypto’s collapse has revealed a yawning divide: As employees of crypto companies lose their jobs and ordinary investors suffer huge losses, top executives have emerged relatively unscathed.

No crypto investor has fully escaped the downturn. But a small group of industry titans accumulated immense wealth as prices spiked over the last two years, giving them an enviable cushion. Many of them bought Bitcoin, Ether and other virtual currencies years ago, when prices were a small fraction of their current value. Some locked in their gains early, selling parts of their crypto holdings. Others run publicly traded crypto companies and cashed out of their stock or invested in real estate.

By contrast, many amateur traders flooded into the crypto market during the pandemic, when prices had already started soaring. Some poured in their life savings, leaving them vulnerable to a crash. Thousands also flocked to work for crypto companies, thinking it was a ticket to new riches. Now many of them have seen their savings vanish or have lost their jobs.

The Supreme Court Just Expanded States’ Power to Prosecute Crimes on Tribal Land – Mother Jones (Me: Hands off, it’s their land!)

Neil Gorsuch, who was joined by the three liberal justice in his dissent, wrote that when the Cherokee were exiled to Oklahoma, they were promised that they would be free from state interference. “Where this Court once stood firm, today it wilts,” Gorsuch wrote. “Where our predecessors refused to participate in one State’s unlawful power grab at the expense of the Cherokee, today’s Court accedes to another’s.”

Big Shock in Big Bend – The Rio Grande Dries Up

Tall canyon walls stretch to either side of the dry, cracked riverbed of the Rio Grande. Tewo people can be seen in the distance walking along it.
WHAT’S MISSING FROM THIS PICTURE? THE RIO GRANDE RUNS DRY AT SANTA ELENA CANYON DYLAN BADDOUR/TEXAS OBSERVER

It’s a grim warning sign for the lower reaches of the Rio Grande, which provide water to millions of acres of crops and to many people in Texas and Mexico. The river has dried up in other spots off and on for decades now, battered by drought and overuse, but never in these places. No one alive has seen the river as it looks today.

Avian Flu Diary: CDC Opens EOC for Monkeypox Response – HHS Unveils Targeted Vaccine Plan

Today, CDC continues to lean forward with an aggressive public health response to the monkeypox outbreak by activating its Emergency Operations Center (EOC). This action stands up the CDC’s command center for monitoring and coordinating the emergency response to monkeypox and mobilizing additional CDC personnel and resources. CDC’s activation of the EOC allows the agency to further increase operational support for the response to meet the outbreak’s evolving challenges. It is home to more than 300 CDC staff working in collaboration with local, national, and international response partners on public health challenges. The activation of the EOC will serve to further supplement the ongoing work of CDC staff to respond to this outbreak. Global COVID cases rise as BA.4 and BA.5 expand | CIDRAP

COVID-19 cases jumped 18% last week and are at their highest levels since April, and the increase comes as the more transmissible Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants cause most infections, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today in its latest update.

BA.4, BA.5 make up 55% of global samples

Four of the six WHO regions saw rises last week: the Eastern Mediterranean, Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Americas. Globally, deaths stayed level, but were up in the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asian, and Americas regions.
