U.S. Orders 2.5 Million More Monkeypox Vaccine Doses

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Friday that it has ordered an additional 2.5 million doses of Bavarian Nordic’s JYNNEOS, an FDA-licensed vaccine indicated for prevention of smallpox and monkeypox, for use in responding to current or future monkeypox outbreaks and as part of U.S. smallpox preparedness.

Deliveries from this latest order of the Bavarian Nordic‘s Jynneos vaccine will begin arriving at the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) later this year and will continue through early 2023 HHS said in a statement.

“We are working around-the-clock with public health officials in states and large metro areas to provide them with vaccines and treatments to respond to the current monkeypox outbreak,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “This order of additional JYNNEOS vaccine will help us push out more vaccine quickly, knowing that we have more doses on the way in the coming months — and is only possible because of our longstanding investment in smallpox and monkeypox preparedness.”

Taiwan reports 32,681 new COVID-19 cases, 88 deaths – Focus Taiwan

Taiwan reported 32,681 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, all but 114 of which were domestic infections, and 88 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The 88 patients whose deaths were reported Sunday ranged in age from their 20s to 90s. Eighty-five of them had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and among the other three, one was unvaccinated and two had received three COVID-19 vaccine shots, the CECC said.

In total, 42 of the deceased patients were unvaccinated, according to the CECC.

COVID-19: Israel’s health minister recommends wearing masks indoors – The Jerusalem Post

As the sixth wave of COVID-19 continues to swell, Prime Minister Yair Lapid presided over a meeting in his Jerusalem office on Sunday afternoon to discuss how to cope with the continuing pandemic.

“Maintaining the level of readiness is critical. We are staying on top of it,” said the new premier, as former prime minister Naftali Bennett, Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz and ministry experts and other state officials looked on.

The Week’s Best Cartoons 7/2

This week, as has been the case for many weeks/months of late, there was plenty for the political cartoonists to choose from.  Recent Supreme Court rulings and Tuesday’s televised hearing of Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony to the January 6th committee are, naturally, the main topics and the cartoonists have done a great job showing us the drama and angst that defines our nation today.  You won’t find much in the way of mirth, but there is a certain dark humour woven into it all.  Please be sure to click on the link at the bottom of this post to see the rest of the cartoons!  Thank you, TokyoSand, for finding some of the best ‘toons from this past dark week.
