Recalled BrucePac meat in Trader Joe’s, Target, Walmart, Publix, more

A massive meat recall prompted by listeria concerns is affecting products in some of the most popular grocery stores across the U.S., including Walmart, Public, Target, Aldi, Amazon, Trader Joe’s and more.

Pre-cooked meat producer BrucePac has released more information about the products impacted by its nearly 10 million-pound recall first announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Wednesday. Routine testing found evidence of listeria monocytogenes on BrucePac ready-to-eat poultry, which can cause a listeriosis infection if consumed.

Ex-Trump Aides Fear Second Term Crisis | TIME

Now some former Trump advisors are raising the alarm about the dangers of Trump having access to the Doomsday Book in a second term. The former officials—which include Mark Harvey, who oversaw the Doomsday Book while on Trump’s National Security Council, and Miles Taylor, a former chief of staff for Trump’s Department of Homeland Security—worry that Trump would use the powers in situations that fall far short of the crises they were drafted to address. Trump has a history of testing the limits of presidential powers, and in a second term would be free of many of the guardrails that restricted his first one. The Supreme Court ruled in July that Presidents have partial immunity for official actions. Trump’s senior advisors have a plan to purge the federal service of people unwilling to carry out his orders. “He’s going to be surrounded by a set of people that would say, ‘You have the power to do this,’” says Harvey. “Frankly, if he says, ‘Yes,’ and there are people that go do it, what’s to stop him?”

But to use these powers, a President is expected to have a genuine emergency that justifies their use, say two former White House lawyers familiar with the draft documents. The draft orders in the Doomsday Book are written for truly extraordinary situations that have debilitated the federal government or Congress and require the President to ensure the continuity of government, according to the former White House lawyers. If a President overstated the crisis, the order could be struck down in court. The last time the book was revised was during the Obama administration, and the Biden administration is currently reviewing it, says a person familiar with the documents. The Trump campaign declined to comment for this story which is based on interviews with more than a dozen national security officials from the current and previous administrations, including five from Trump’s first term.

Global Handwashing Day? | From Behind the Pen

Okay folks, now I am in no way trying to be funny or judgemental. I truly understand that so many areas do not have access to clean water for basic necessities. Still, I had one of my head-scratching moments when I saw an email giving some tips for how and when to wash your hands. There is actually a day designated for highlighting the importance of washing your hands with soap and water. Seriously. October 15 is Global Handwashing DayToday, this observance is designed to motivate and mobilize people around the world to improve their hand-washing habits.

Now, let me just say that typically, we learn the habit of washing our hands as a toddler. Yes, it is a sign of good hygiene but it is also a safety measure for fighting germs and bacteria. Now, during the COVID pandemic, one of the resounding reminders was to thoroughly wash your hands and cover your mouth when you cough. Really? Okay, this stunned me a little because this shouldn’t be a directive you have to tell grown folks to do. But that is just my opinion.

What also stunned me before this pandemic rolled around was when I walked into the bathroom at a restaurant and saw signs posted “Employees, remember to wash your hands!” What the what? When I saw a few of those signs in the women’s bathroom of all places, I lost my appetite. But then I thought about those restaurants that I typically visited that don’t have those signs posted. Do those employees practice good hygiene before serving their patrons? You don’t want to know what was running through my mind right then.

But, for the sake of sharing this public announcement for Global Handwashing Day, helps to increase awareness and understanding of hand hygiene, which is a necessity for me.

Surrounded by War: The Christians of Lebanon Refuse to Evacuate – DER SPIEGEL

When the situation grew desperate, they came to the church. The war has surrounded them, and now, the 100 remaining residents of Qlayaa, a Christian village in southern Lebanon not far from the border with Israel, are waiting for Pierre Raï, the priest.

A woman has tears in her eyes, while the children are vying to see who gets to hang on the greasy rope to ring the church bell. If they pull hard enough, rope pulls them a few centimeters into the air.

Dressed in black robes, Father Pierre speaks to those gathered before him: “One year ago, we decided together that we would stay when the war arrived,” he begins. “Now, Israel has ordered us to leave our homes. But we won’t go!” Strong, baldheaded and undaunted, he is a fitting shepherd for his uneasy congregation, who don’t want to leave, but who are afraid of staying.
