Writing Process: Shifting Gears is Hard, but Notes Help

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

Transitioning from Project Do Better, now that it’s finished, back to my novel work in progress, Who By Fire, is much more difficult than I anticipated. I’ve been trying to work on both of these books at the same time, with the result that the novel has been vastly neglected. Now that I’m winding down the work on the Do Better manifesto, even as I still search for someone to pass the baton for the Project, I find myself thinking there must be something that I’ve missed or some other thing that I need to do for Project Do Better.  I find that the notes I’ve taken on the writing process, as I continue to work on my craft, help a bit.   Concentrating on the novel still feels like a world away, though.
As our world gets warmer and warmer, in bad ways.

Number of teens using Facebook crashes as YouTube becomes platform of choice | TechSpot

The bad news for Facebook came from a survey by Pew Research Center. It questioned 1,316 U.S. teens between the ages of 13 and 17 about their online habits and found that just 32% of them use the Facebook app.

The results are a stark contrast to Pew Research Center’s survey in 2015, which found a massive 71% of teens used Facebook at that time. But the social network has seen this demographic decline yearly since then. Despite CEO Mark Zuckerberg calling for the platform to refocus its efforts toward serving younger users last year, more teens have abandoned it in droves.

Republicans in Congress argued that none of these bills are necessary because the right to birth control and the right to same-sex marriage are safe. “In no way, shape or form is access to contraception limited or at risk of being limited,” Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) said during Thursday’s debate on the birth control bill. “The liberal majority is clearly trying to stoke fears and mislead the American people once again because in their minds stoking fear clearly is the only way that they can win.” (Yahoo News)

“The FBI has gone rogue and is doing the dirty work of a communist regime,” tweeted Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).

Attorney General Merrick Garland Delivers Remarks | OPA | Department of Justice – Trump search warrant

Faithful adherence to the rule of law is the bedrock principle of the Justice Department and of our democracy.

Upholding the rule of law means applying the law evenly, without fear or favor. Under my watch, that is precisely what the Justice Department is doing.

All Americans are entitled to the evenhanded application of the law, to due process of the law, and to the presumption of innocence.

Much of our work is by necessity conducted out of the public eye. We do that to protect the constitutional rights of all Americans and to protect the integrity of our investigations.

Federal law, longstanding Department rules, and our ethical obligations prevent me from providing further details as to the basis of the search at this time. There are, however, certain points I want you to know.

First, I personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant in this matter.

Second, the Department does not take such a decision lightly. Where possible, it is standard practice to seek less intrusive means as an alternative to a search, and to narrowly scope any search that is undertaken.

Third, let me address recent unfounded attacks on the professionalism of the FBI and Justice Department agents and prosecutors. I will not stand by silently when their integrity is unfairly attacked.

The men and women of the FBI and the Justice Department are dedicated, patriotic public servants.

Every day, they protect the American people from violent crime, terrorism, and other threats to their safety, while safeguarding our civil rights. They do so at great personal sacrifice and risk to themselves.

I am honored to work alongside them.

This is all I can say right now. More information will be made available in the appropriate way and at the appropriate time.

Digging in the dirt: California mining firms seek to clean up lithium′s production footprint | Business | Economy and finance news from a German perspective | DW | 09.08.2022

Compared with salar ponds or hard rock mine pits, a geothermal power plant is relatively small, so direct lithium recovery projects require much less land use. The process avoids both the destruction and waste created by hard rock mining. It has a much smaller effect on groundwater sources than solar pond mining, because brine is re-injected into the ground after its use.

The Search For an AC That Doesn’t Destroy the Planet – Slashdot

Technology to build cleaner, more efficient air conditioners does exist. Two major AC manufacturers, Daikin and Gree Electric Appliances, shared the top award at last year’s Global Cooling Prize, an international competition focused on designing climate-friendly AC tech. Both companies created ACs with higher internal performance that used less environmentally damaging refrigerants; the new units could reduce their impact on the climate by five times. […] Another strategy is to double down on heat pumps, which are air conditioners that also work in reverse, using vapor compression to absorb and move heat into a home, instead of releasing it outside. Heat pumps usually cost several thousand dollars, though the Inflation Reduction Act includes a proposal for a significant heat pump rebate, and President Joe Biden has invoked the Defense Production Act to ramp up production.
