How to find your calling

Darcy Hitchcock

Our world is in quite a fix, with interrelated wicked problems like climate change, species extinction, habitat loss, and social inequity. It can be overwhelming. How do you figure out what your role is in making the world better? You need to do two things:

  • Integrate sustainability into your personal life.
  • Find your purpose in your public life (whether you’re school age, working age or retired.)

The first is fairly straightforward: minimize energy use, switch to renewables, eat less animal protein, travel less by fossil fuels, decide to limit your family size, etc. We need to reduce our carbon footprint by half by 2030 so see where you can reduce the most.

So in this post, I’ll focus on what is often more difficult: finding your purpose, you’re life’s work, what I refer to as a calling.

I went through three stages, which might inform your own journey. (The video…

I am Tibet

Silent Songs of Sonsnow

I am Tibet
The Mountains and Minerals
Which the dragon continues to mine and market,

I am Tibet
The Rivers and Rivulet
Which the dragon continues to dilute and pollute,

I am Tibet
the Monks and Nuns
Which the Dragon continues to disrobe

I am Tibet
The trees and Monasteries
Which the Dragon continues to destroy and demolish

I am Tibet
The Grassland and Grazing ground
Which the Dragon continues to Fence Forcefully

I am Tibet
The lakes and Lagoons
Which the Dragon continues to hollow out for Fishes

I am Tibet
The burning bodies and the Freedom Flames
Which the Dragon continues to Cover

Learning To Write Lawmakers, on Day 25/67?

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

My thoughts on  Day 25 of my 67 night-school class set of lesson plans for GED/HiSet learners, are on how to build knowledge around reshaping our laws.
I think that writing our lawmakers is an important start.  Laws may have changed since 2015 or so, when I initially wrote this, but it should still be a reasonable form letter, no?  This is an important part of Project Do Better.

I thought I had gotten this posted years ago, but cannot find it:

Sometimes Silence Really Is Golden … — Filosofa’s Word

Sometimes when you have nothing to say, you should simply … say nothing.  Today, I have nothing of any importance to say, so I am giving you all (and myself) a break by saying nothing!  Meanwhile, though … I highly recommend that you go read Keith’s post today about workplace humour!  Guaranteed to make you […]

♫ Summertime ♫ (Redux) — Filosofa’s Word

It seems that I play this one once every summer!  It’s a sultry song that perfectly fits in with those dog days of summer.  Last year when I played it, our friend Clive said he preferred a version by an artist I never heard of before, Lana Del Rey.  Curious, I went for a listen […]

The Week’s Best Cartoons 8/20 — Filosofa’s Word

Sometimes these days I think that if I were a political cartoonist (I can’t even draw an egg properly, so no danger of that!) I would just post a black screen, or one depicting a super storm, for ‘bleak’ is the word that often comes to mind (thank you, Republicans, for the ulcer).  But this […]
