There are some days when you feel like you can simply crack at any time. You can go through a myriad of emotions from one extreme to the next and not know what to do or where to turn, but you just know you have to do something because you feel trapped. Yep, after losing count of those days of entrapment, you know you have to break out of your shell because you can’t stay where you are if the path to a new adventure is what you’re looking for. Have a FANtabulous day everyone!

Paints made from pollution

Darcy Hitchcock

When you think of states with coal mining, Ohio doesn’t typically come to mind. But old coal mines are leaking a disgusting, acidic iron ore sludge into the rivers, killing life in and along them.

Two professors from Ohio State, an environmental scientist and an art professor, have collaborated to invent a system to clean up the river pollution and use it to make artist-grade paint.

In 2018, alongside local non-profit Rural Action, they partnered with paint company Gamblin to create a limited run of 500 oil paints. They were offered as a reward for supporters of the Kickstarter campaign that funded their research-scale pilot facility. Named the “Reclaimed Earth Colors” set, the paints were popular amongst artists, says Sabraw, allowing them to incorporate an environmentally conscious aspect in their work.

By 2024 they plan to have a full scale system operating in Truetown through their social…

Oregon White Supremacist Pleads Guilty to Hate Crime and False Statement Charges in Connection with Assault of a Black Man | OPA | Department of Justice

In his plea agreement, Smith admitted that, at the time of the assault, he was a member of a white supremacist support group. On Dec. 8, 2018, Smith entered a bar in Lynnwood, Washington, with others, including fellow support group members as well as members of a higher-level white supremacist group. Smith wore clothing and patches indicating his group membership and gave a “Nazi salute” as he entered the bar. While inside, Smith assaulted T.S, a Black man who was serving as the disc jockey at the bar, because he believed that T.S. was being disrespectful to the members of the white supremacist groups. Smith repeatedly punched T.S., while others punched, kicked, and/or stomped on T.S. and called T.S. racial slurs. As a result of the assault, T.S. suffered bodily injuries. Two bystanders attempted to intervene to help T.S. and stop the assault. Both bystanders were assaulted by members of the white supremacist groups, and both sustained injuries.

In addition to the hate crime charge, Smith pleaded guilty to making false statements to FBI agents about circumstances surrounding the assault. Specifically, Smith falsely claimed to the agents that he did not remember anyone calling T.S. a racial slur during the assault. This statement was false, in that Smith knew he and others called T.S. racial slurs before, during and after the assault. Smith made this false statement to the FBI because he wanted to cover up the motive for the assault, which was the bias that he and others had against T.S.’s race.

BOY AM I SLOW!

NANMYKEL.COM

My family thinks I’m paranoid, but I’m thinking I’m Miss Pollyanna and too trusting.

I just put two and two together and got four, instead of five… I never realized that mankind/womankind has tipped the scales so that dark colors are associated with death and dying. And age. The symbolic slur occurs even in gift giving of new clothes. Somehow, folks seem to feel more comfortable easing oldsters out of tbe limelight by relegating them to the dark side.

The first time I realized this (okay, suspected this), was when one of my children warned me not to give my young nieces any jewelry with brown stones in it. (I often gave fossilized jewelry of the darker kind),”because they won’t wear it.”

Then I looked in my closet. Am I molded (thanks, Darwin!) to dressing myself precipitously in the colors of the cold, cold ground? Quoth the raven (and me)…

Now, I originally posted this one in January 2020 after our friend Ellen reminded me that January 16th is “Annual Appreciate A Dragon Day”, and she suggested this one, Puff the Magic Dragon.  Okay, so it’s not January, but this song did a flying leap into my head tonight and I cannot seem to get […]
