Parashat Re’eh, and Self Health Care

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

Parashat Re’eh / פרשתרְאֵה

I taught a class on this parashah at the DC Beit Midrash, some years ago, as a follow up to the previous year’s class on a different parashah.   Since I schedule my posts ahead, I will be away (mostly) from the internet all weekend, concentrating on clearing paper notes from my desk for my own mental health.

May we all find healthy and inclusive community.

I will be taking off tomorrow, so our usual Sunday GED class post will resume next week.

Action Items:

1.) Share your thoughts on how community can help, or hinder, inclusive thinking,

É preciso tempo

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

É preciso tempo para transformar o instante no tempo das coisas que somos.

Há tempo de procura e de encontro,

Tempo de nunca se deixar de amar

e amando e sentindo amado,

Amar mais ainda.

É preciso tempo

Para apreciar a vida,

Escolher os lugares aonde devemos demorar,

Apreciar o belo,

O que nos torna constelação

e tudo aquilo que nos faz transbordar.

Ah, o tempo é necessário em tudo!

Do artificial ao insaciável

Ele é necessário para alma não cansar.

O tempo é matéria reservada a vida.

A justiça

A pureza.

E a sua única exigência é fazer com que

Não se desperdice vida,

Mas remende os tecidos necessários para sua melhor vestimenta

O instante.

And lo and behold, this one jumped into my face screaming “Play me, Play me!!!” And thus … I give you, Mungo Jerry …

This song was written by Ray Dorset, who was the lead singer and guitarist for the group Mungo Jerry. Now, until I first posted this song a few years ago, I thought Mungo Jerry was a solo artist, the one who turns out to be Dorset.

The band was known as Memphis Leather and The Good Earth before getting a record deal and changing their name to Mungo Jerry (after the character Mungojerrie from the T…

Slate: The Long History of Forgiving Debt

Diane Ravitch's blog

Republicans are outraged that Biden is forgiving the student loan debt of millions of borrowers by $10,000-20,000. They have denounced loan forgiveness as “socialism,” a “big government giveaway,” and worse.

They are on the wrong side of history and politics.

I can tell you from the two years I worked in the U.S. Department of Education that there is a student loan industry that has a powerful lobby. They want student debt to be as high as possible and they want the rates to be as high as possible. Biden’s decision is very disappointing to their lobbyists.

Zachary D. Carter writes in Slate that there is a long history of forgiving debt. This is a terrific article. I urge you to read it.

He begins:

In 1920, the world’s most famous economist, John Maynard Keynes, was digging through old books on the economy of the ancient world, when he discovered…
