Sometimes Life Changes in the Blink of an Eye

From Behind the Pen

Change is the essence of life – everything is in a process of moving, growing, adapting and changing, and change is the most important action that shapes the direction of life.

It’s hard to believe that as we near the end of summer in record 90-degree temperatures, I am seeing the leaves of a few trees behind our house turning into warm shades of fall. Huh? What? Okay, I certainly didn’t see this coming. The official season of fall for us begins on September 22, the fall equinox. Of course, I don’t expect fall foliage to suddenly appear on this day.

I’m reminded of previous posts where I talk about the expectancy of change. Sometimes change is predictable, and sometimes it isn’t, but we know sooner or later it will happen. At this very moment, things are changing, including each of us. It’s…

UK passes legislation to protect sentient creatures

Darcy Hitchcock

In April 2022, the United Kingdom passed the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act. It formed a committee to make recommendations for animals it deemed sentient, including non-human vertebrates (including livestock), cephalopods (like octopus), and decapods (like lobsters and shrimp.)

The thinking seems to be you need sentience to experience pain. I’m not sure I agree with that but I’m not a biologist. It seems that sentience could make you worry about the potential for pain. But even grass reacts when it is mowed, releasing chemicals, that cut grass smell I used to love until I found that it was the grass screaming.

What makes the UK act interesting is that the list of critters that are considered sentient is growing. According to a recent study, even insects may have a form of sentience. Spiders likely dream and bees weigh the cost benefit of pain.

and ends with the cries of others,
between these two,
make sure not to cry yourself
or make others cry…

♫ Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves ♫ (Redux)

Filosofa's Word

Okay, once again perusing my list of songs requested or otherwise TBP, and I see that Scottie requested this one!  Now, I played it a couple of years ago and have no idea when Scottie requested it (I swear I used to be such an organized person that at one time, I’d have noted the date and time it was requested!), so I don’t know if it was before or after the last time I played it.  Ni modo … it’s a good story-telling, toe-tapping song and I hope you’ll all enjoy it!

According to SongFacts …

This was Cher’s first #1 solo hit, and part of a big comeback. 1967 was the last time she had a hit either on her own or with Sonny & Cher. She released a financially disastrous movie in 1969 called Chastity, and that same year released an album that tanked. That year she and…

Minbari Mondays: Two Lessons From “Lines of Communication” (B5:s4e11) On Precedents — Inspiring Critical Thinking and Community via Books, Lessons, and Story

1.) The  erosion of long-held protections is bad for civilizations, and 2.) Precedents, and the stability they provide, must be taught, discussed, and built upon, Grey Council. The Minbari find, as we are finding now in American society, that it is important to talk with those we live near, rather than talking at each other. […]
