Politicians are playing politics with refugees, but these workers are exactly what the US economy needs

The reason we see growing demand for these very different groups of occupations—some of them fundamental and some of them more advanced—is because, simply put, for each doctor in Arizona doing her job, she must count on several fundamental workers that complement her work, from drivers and cooks to assistants and nurses. And without these occupations, the doctor simply cannot do her job.

Thus, if sanity would reign in this country, politicians would have realized by now that welcoming these immigrants is not a burden, but a blessing, especially now when labor markets are tight and labor shortages are adding fuel to an inflation that is already boiling.

In this sense, there is one thing President Biden can do immediately to allow these immigrants to join the labor force: extend eligibility of the existing temporary protected status for Venezuelans to include those that arrived after March 2021, which would immediately give work permits to these thousands of workers. The job of these governors who are bussing immigrants across the country is not to spend taxpayer money creating a national controversy for their own political gain, but rather to use this opportunity to come together and support this move, too. Doing so would assure that the governors are not only acting humanely with people in need, but also helping them to reach their full potential in a new place they want to call home.

This controversy should serve as a reminder that America’s debate on immigration needs more policy and less politics.

Pegatron starts iPhone factory in Chennai, third such firm in India | Business Standard News

Taiwan’s Pegatron on Friday became the third Apple vendor to set up a manufacturing unit in India, inaugurating a facility at Mahindra World City in . It will invest around Rs 1,100 crore in the unit, potentially generating around 14,000 jobs.

The other two Apple vendors with units in India are  and Wistron, both Taiwanese. Pegatron’s facility comes at a time when Apple is expected to move at least a quarter of its manufacturing facilities to India by 2025. It signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government in February last year.

“The fact that Pegatron has started production within 18 months of signing the MoU highlights the investor-friendly climate in Tamil Nadu. China is where new cell phone models are manufactured in bulk. We are working to change that and make Tamil Nadu such a manufacturing hub,” said Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin.

The electronics major applied for the central government’s production-linked incentive scheme. Tamil Nadu plans to develop Hosur, Coimbatore and Sriperumbudur as electronics manufacturing hubs.

The state contributes to around 20 per cent of the country’s electronics manufacturing. Major players in the state include Samsung, Foxconn, Tata Electronics and Dell among major investors. Stalin said the state is working to improve supply chain.

Bird flu impacting availability of some grocery items

Western Mass News stopped by Fruit Fair in Chicopee where they told us what items they are struggling to keep in stock over the past few weeks.

“We have had a serious shortage of deli turkeys. We have had to cancel our SKUs, all the flavored ones, low salt ones, pan-seared ones that have not been coming in,” said Fruit Fair co-owner Sam Newell.

Newell told us the reason behind what’s causing the shortage of turkey.

“It’s because of the avian flu, the bird flu. It affected chickens and turkeys all over and I remember a few months back, chicken prices went really high up because of it. A lot of our main manufacturers had to shut down because of the flu,” Newell added.

Review: Murat, and Loyalty — Inspiring Critical Thinking and Community via Books, Lessons, and Story

I found this book both interesting and oddly inspiring. It was very good:  a good reader and a nice short story with loyalty, sacrifice, empathy, and above all, death with dignity. Bon c’était très bien : une bonne lectrice et une histoire courte avec la loyauté, les sacrifices, l’empathie , et surtout de […]

Industrial Dictatorship — Filosofa’s Word

I have many ‘pet peeves’ these days, one of which is the wealth inequality in this country.  It keeps growing and growing like an overfed toddler and while most people struggle to pay their bills and put food on the table, the 1% or so at the top laugh their way to their broker’s office […]
