Two Right-Wing Operatives Plead Guilty in 2020 Robocall Scheme – The New York Times

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/25/us/politics/ohio-robocalls-wohl-burkman-guilty.html

Two right-wing political operatives have pleaded guilty in Ohio to a telecommunications fraud charge for arranging thousands of robocalls that falsely claimed that the information voters included with mail ballots could be used by law enforcement and debt collectors, prosecutors said.

The operatives, Jacob Wohl, 24, of Los Angeles, and Jack Burkman, 56, of Arlington, Va., entered their pleas on Monday in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court in Cleveland, prosecutors said.

The men were indicted in 2020 after they were accused of using the robocalls to intimidate residents in minority neighborhoods to refrain from voting by mail at a time when many voters were reluctant to cast ballots in person because of the coronavirus pandemic. The calls also claimed that the government could use mail-in voting information to track people for mandatory vaccination programs, prosecutors said.

“These individuals infringed upon the right to vote, which is one of the most fundamental components of our democracy,” the Cuyahoga County prosecutor, Michael C. O’Malley, said in a statement announcing the guilty pleas on Monday.

Over 29,000 migrants died on route to Europe since 2014 – UN agency | Euronews

More than 29,000 people have died on migration routes to Europe since 2014, according to a new report.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said at least 5,684 migrants had died trying to reach Europe since the start of last year alone.

According to its report, the deadliest migration route remains the Central Mediterranean from Libya and Tunisia towards Malta or Italy, with migrants crossing the seas in dangerous, rickety rafts.

The IOM said on Tuesday that 2,836 migrants and refugees have died along this route since January 2021 — an increase on the previous period.

Meanwhile, more than 1,500 deaths have been recorded on the Atlantic Ocean route from West Africa to Spain’s Canary Islands since 2021.

  • The new crop of Covid-19 mutations — BQ1, BQ1.1, and BF7.

  • Human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a single strand RNA virus that can cause lung issues. It’s usually mild and lasts up to a couple of weeks, but is more of a threat for infants and the elderly.(1)
  • Airborne fungal spores, including CladosporiumPenicilliumAspergillus, various basidiomycetes, and Alternaria. Among these, Aspergillus is known to colonize in the lungs and can put patient into intensive care. These spores are thought to peak in the summer but with warmer temperatures, can with being brought indoors though ventilation systems, can last well into the traditional flu season.(2,3,4)

Justice Alito Assured Senator Ted Kennedy That He Would Not Overturn Roe v. Wade | Diane Ravitch’s blog

The New York Times reported that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito assured Senator Ted Kennedy that he would not overturn Roe v. Wade. He said repeatedly that he respects precedent and considered Roe to be settled law. Seventeen years later, Justice Alito wrote the scathing opinion overturning Roe v. Wade and asserting that it was wrong from the start.

How should Americans react when they learn that at least three of the 6 justices who voted to overturn Roe are liars?

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

O menino ambicioso

não de poder ou glória

mas de soltar a coisa

ocultar no seu peito

escrever no caderno

e vagamente conta

à maneira de sonho

sem sentido nem forma

aquilo que não sabe.

Ficou na folha a mancha

do tinteiro entornado,

mas tão esmaecida

que nem mancha o papel.

Quem decifra por baixo

a letra do menino,

agora que o homem sabe

dizer o que não mais

se oculta no seu peito?

♫ End Of The Line ♫ — Filosofa’s Word

I had only ever briefly heard of the group Traveling Wilburys, but a few nights ago Clive suggested a song by them so I thought I’d look into them a bit more, and I’m glad I did!  A bit about the group first … Based on the accomplishments of its members/founders, the group is indeed […]

Europe Revealed – Migration The New Europeans – DW – 10/25/2022

Krakow’s population has increased by 50% since Russia attacked Ukraine in February 2022. Meanwhile, Europe has been busying itself with drawing up real and virtual borders that are patrolled by militia. But migration is an entirely normal phenomenon. People who leave their home country in search of a better life have shaped the face of the continent for centuries. From England to Bulgaria, expats are a core part of Europe’s identity.

In spite of this, foreign workers frequently face rejection. They are often blamed for national economic decline. Nonetheless, they are a vital element of modern-day Europe: In an aging society that depends on migrants to survive, they are the backbone of the labor market. But as right-wing and eurosceptic voices rise, these basic facts tend to get lost.

Now, the war in Ukraine is causing Europe to re-think its position –  both ethically and practically. Once again, Europe’s migration policies are facing historical challenges.
