It’s killing hope: Stand Up for Jamaica is alarmed at planned minimum mandatory sentence for minors

Politicians love to show they are “getting tough” on crime. As Jamaica’s homicide rate hovers close to or at the top of the global rankings year after year, the rhetoric becomes more heated. We start hearing about “violence producers” and alleged criminals are labeled “terrorists.” No, they are not; terrorism has a political motive, whereas 99.9% of our gangsters are interested, simply, in money.

But, do the “tough on crime” policies really work? Or will they, as has happened in the U.S.,simply fill our prisons to overflowing (we will definitely have to build new ones) and clog up our judicial system? As one professor of philosophy at Ohio Wesleyan University put it:

It’s easy for those of us in more privileged groups to be indifferent to the plight of people who are incarcerated.

And will such measures as mandatory minimum sentences really make the average Jamaican on the street…
