BIRTHDAY BLUES VS.BIRTHDAY BLESSINGS

I’m an octogenarian of 85.

My antiquity astonishes me.

I’ve got three types of cancer.

I don’t see, hear, or walk well.

I’m a medical dumpster fire,

a near senile, geriatric elder,

doddering, decrepit, obsolete,

out-of-date, far past my prime.

Still I embrace my life’s remnants.

Never has time been more valued,

nature’s splendor more precious,

loved ones more deeply cherished.

I now take life day by day,

savoring each dawn as a gift.

Living is intensely relished.

I intend to try lingering longer.

The Poetry of Abstract Art

From Behind the Pen

Huh? What is it? Why?
I can’t decipher but try
I’m stumped, but smitten.

Abstract art they say
confusion is all I see
still fascinated.

© Kym Gordon Moore

Sometimes abstract art may not always be understood and perhaps it wasn’t necessarily meant to be. Like dancing, you glide through the ebb and flow of textures, colors, randomization, or even haphazardness, feeling something that may be sublime or unmoving. Perhaps abstract art doesn’t have to make sense, it just invites a conversation that probably never would have happened before you encountered it. Maybe it is a shock to your creative system that disrupts your “normal” order of things, and introduces you to an extravaganza of cultural delight.

Sometimes, you have to shake up your creative juices with a new flavor of artistic spices. Instead of the same ole, same ole day-to-day, bland serving of boredom, you would not believe what…

Good People Doing Good Things — BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS!

Filosofa's Word

Books.  Books are probably the single most important tool we have at our disposal to teach children, to help them grow into their future role in the world.  From books they learn so much … history, different cultures, science, art, literature, and much, much more.  Think back to your own childhood … what would it have been without books?  Today we hear so much from politicians, religious leaders, and even school boards about banning books.  Personally, I think banning books is criminal!  Yes, some books may not be appropriate for very young children, but that is a call to be made by professional educators, not politicians!  Today, I want to introduce you to three young good people who are doing their part to ensure that young people have books to read, to learn and to grow from!  They, perhaps more than any others, are helping to secure the future by…

Book Review: Uncle Tom’s Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

I was shocked when I saw how bravely Tom stood up to his ‘master’ and refused to obey the order to whip his fellow slave, knowing that the price would inevitably be a painful death. I see that the sacrifice is now-a-days considered to be giving in, but in that context, under those circumstances, his only choices were obey or dis-obey, non-violently or make life even worse for the others and himself. Given those realities, he acted heroically, not as we currently use the phrase ‘an Uncle Tom.’

Obviously, this meticulously researched book provided me with both linguistic background for my wip Who By Fire  whobyfireiwilltmpcover   (in terms of how various classes of people spoke during this period), and with the author’s extensive notes at the back of the copy I borrowed from the DC Public Library, with her annotations responding to contemporary criticisms…
