Emptied Your Trash Can Lately?

From Behind the Pen

Just as an overflowing trash bin needs to be emptied, or the recycling bin on your computer needs to have items permanently deleted, all of us need to frequently empty our spiritual trash cans that are overflowing with balled-up discarded pieces of internal and external waste.

Our mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical states are all too often filled with an overflowing amount of garbage belonging to someone else that builds up and eventually stifles our “personal operational system.” The numbers are staggering and we can no longer allow these trash receptacles to continue overflowing and polluting our health and wellness. I know we talk about this subject so much that it feels like a scratched or broken record. But with the alarming cases of increased blindsided attacks against our spiritual, mental, and emotional faculties, we have to attack back by deleting, moving away from, or simply shutting down the garbage…

Instant Dutch Baby

snapshotsincursive

What’s Cooking in Gail’s Kitchen? Table Food: Instant Dutch Baby! Be innovative. When my Hawaiian friend, Dillyn, sent me a care package of unique foods from the island, I knew I would make something special to show her. I began with the popular chocolate macadamia nut pancake mix, tweaked it a little, and transformed it into a festive weekend breakfast for two. Everything tastes better with chocolate, doesn’t it? With mini morsels in the batter as well as a sprinkling on top, the flavor was ribboned throughout making one forget about the need for extra syrup. A final dusting of powdered sugar provided a tempting image to share long distance. She approved with glee and open delight. Mahalo!

INSTANT DUTCH BABY

Ingredients:

6 ounces chocolate macadamia nut pancake mix

1 egg

1/2 cup milk

1/3 cup mini chocolate chips, plus 1 tablespoon for topping

Powdered sugar, for garnish

SONG WITHOUT A MELODY

NANMYKEL.COM

GONE SONG

Oh there’s going over the hill, Bill,

also going over the edge.

And then there’s gone, gone, gone.

Their memory of you is at thirty-two

or whenever they knew you last.

Hey hey.

It’s great to be poor

–yet let in the door–

but there’s a big traffic jam

at the eye of the needle.

So I’ll just sing this song and

toddle  along.  Gone, I’m gone.

Still the poor garbage man lingers,

While the auctioneer jingles

coins in his pocket and bangs

down  his gavel, shouting

“Going, Going, Gone!”

Ya think?  Hey hey.

Thoughts On Giving

bluejayblog

Dad used to say that you can tell if someone has a prosperous mindset if they are generous when they don’t have to be. He seemed to follow through on his words more often than not. Although he was not extremely wealthy in the conventional sense, dad picked up the tab for guests at restaurants and movie theatres. He often volunteered his spare time to help with other people’s projects. He practiced balancing thriftiness and extravagance to a high degree.

Dad grew up during the Great Depression in a part of North America that was afflicted by the Dust Bowl. People like dad who struggled through that double-whammy learned how to get by and stay alive in seemingly impossible conditions. Families helped one another and shared whatever resources they could. The sense of community was palpable.

While pondering generosity, I cannot help but think of people who devoted their lives…
