Jenin… Jenin… Jenin – Nadia Harhash

…Today, Jenin, like Gaza in the past, and Nablus, Hebron, and Jerusalem in the future, represents the story of a people living under relentless occupation. This occupation has persisted, with its consequences unfolding since the Balfour Declaration, continuing through the Oslo Accord, and enduring with the promises of Trump and the threats of Netanyahu.
Amidst this ongoing struggle, we cannot overlook the recent Israeli invasion that has resulted in mass destruction and loss of life over the past three days. Opinion | The Supreme Court Enshrines Racial Imbalance – The New York Times

There is a recurrent theme in American history: the clawing back of hard-won progress. And the Supreme Court last week used the most specious of arguments to do so with affirmative action.

In the majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that affirmative action — in this case, the use of race as a factor in university admissions — cannot stand because “eliminating racial discrimination means eliminating all of it.” But, of course, neither the court nor America itself has any desire to eliminate all of it. Reading that line was like having someone spit in my face.

As If Affirmative Action Wasn’t Enough, Now Republicans Are Coming for Minority Scholarships

Last week, the Republican speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly, Robin Vos, implied that he’ll soon work to ban grants designated for minority undergraduate students. Vos took it upon himself to respond to a tweet asserting a scholarship program for Black, Indigenous, Hispanic and other minority students was equivalent to “discrimination.” “We are reviewing the decision and will introduce legislation to correct the discriminatory laws on the books and pass repeals in the fall,” Vos wrote. Vos has always opposed anything related to diversity, equity and inclusion and even went as far as calling DEI programming at the University of Wisconsin as “indoctrination.”
