Kindness, Compassion and Respect

“If you are motivated by a wish to help on the basis of kindness, compassion and respect, then you can do any kind of work, in any field, and function more effectively with less fear or worry, not being afraid of what others think or whether you will ultimately reach your goal.”His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

Felicidade

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

Wildlife overpasses work

Darcy Hitchcock

It’s sickening to see the number of animals our vehicles kill. But collisions with wildlife can also kill people. Various parts of North America have been experimenting with under- and overpasses for wildlife.

They’re not cheap but they appear to be working. In Banff, for example, collisions with elk dropped from around 100 per year to basically zero. They also encourage genetic diversity as animals can move more freely across the landscape.

Before the changes, for example, around 100 elk were killed in collisions each year in the park; that rate has dropped to almost zero. It’s also much safer for humans, since drivers might not survive a crash with a 700-pound elk or grizzly bear. Other studies have found that having the crossings in place can help boost genetic diversity as more animals make it across roads.

April’s Potato Salad

snapshotsincursive

What’s Cooking in Gail’s Kitchen? Elevated Edibles: April’s Potato Salad! For years whenever I made a six-hour road trip to visit my best friend, April, I would request her famous potato salad. Upon arrival, between hugs and laughter, we’d eventually meander to the front porch with a couple of ham sandwiches and a plate of homemade potato salad. As we’d sit there gazing out over cornfields at sunset, I’d inhale the intoxicating scent of juicy sweet corn, the pleasant odor of dewy stalks, humid green earth, and maybe even a touch of honey from waning wildflowers. I probably said the same thing over and over every year, “Life doesn’t get any better than this.”

APRIL’S POTATO SALAD

Ingredients:

7 medium potatoes, peeled and quartered

5 eggs, hard-boiled and chopped

1 1/2 cups mayonnaise

1 tablespoon vinegar

1 tablespoon yellow mustard

1 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup…

Federal Judge blocks law that would criminalize assisting voters – AsAmNews

Last week, Monday, a Federal judge struck down a Florida law that would subject third-party organizations that register voters to hefty $50,000 fines if the staff that assists voters have been convicted of a felony or aren’t US citizens.

In his decision, U.S. Chief District Judge Mark Walker called the law “Florida’s latest assault on the right to vote,” according to Politico.

Voting rights organizations say these laws will disproportionately impact AAPI voters with limited English and tech skills, especially the elderly.

Ohio: Legislature Gives More Money to Students in Private Schools Than Those in Public Schools

Diane Ravitch's blog

Stephen Dyer, former Ohio legislator, closely follows school funding in the state. After studying the latest budget, he realized that the Legislature was sending more money to private school students than to public school students. The Ohio legislature loves charters, Cybercharters, and vouchers. Apparently, the Republicans who dominate the Legislators don’t care about public schools. Nor do they care about accountability.

Dyer begins:

Look, I’m really excited that the Ohio General Assembly followed through on its promise to continue implementing the Fair School Funding Plan — the state’s second attempt at meeting its constitutional mandate to provide a thorough and efficient system of public schools for its 1.7 million students.

I mean, in nearly 2/3 of Ohio school districts, the state is already meeting or exceeding its promised funding amounts from two years ago. And while the lion’s share of the remaining shortage is felt in the state’s most…
