Pregnant migrants at US border say Texas soldiers denied them water | Texas | The Guardian

“They told us that they couldn’t give us water because it was not their responsibility,” Carmen told CNN after she tried asking for water.

“They asked us why we had left our countries,” she continued, saying that she asked for water again at around 2pm. “I felt I was suffocating,” said Carmen, who added that she entered the Rio Grande to cool herself down.

“They showed us handcuffs and they told us they would arrest us,” she said, referring to the soldiers.

Carmen went on to tell CNN that she was refused water several more times on 12 July and that she and her husband eventually spent the night on the Rio Grande riverbank.

“I didn’t really sleep … I was scared,” Carmen said, adding that she saw snakes nearby.

According to CNN, Carmen was eventually seen by a paramedic, who she said told her: “I don’t know why they treated you badly when all you want is a better life.” US immigration authorities later took Carmen and her husband for processing, CNN reports.

Republicans Have Shown Us That Words Matter—And So Do Elections

At the very least Congressman Crane’s and Senator Tuberville’s words are racist and, while I try not to judge anyone, if they think those racist words and actions are acceptable, they need to think again. In fact, precious few GOP leaders have denounced this foolishness and, while I’m not surprised, I am profoundly disappointed. Words matter, and so do elections. Because folks like Congressman Crane and Sen. Tuberville and their allies are representing us. And we can’t let their verbal violence pass. Florida history lesson: Slavery as an unpaid internship? | Editorial

Abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass did not smile in his portraits. There is a reason why: the nature of slavery itself. To understand, look at this famous photo of a former slave showing the scars on his back from being whipped. That picture was taken in 1863 after he had escaped to become a Union soldier during the Civil War.Abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass did not smile in his portraits. Florida Does It Again

In Saner Thought

We could write volumes on the lunacy coming out of Florida under the watchful eye of DeSantis….and now they have gone that proverbial one step further….this time in education.

I am a proponent of teaching history as it is….that means no whitewashing the embarrassing bits….teach it like it is.

We know that these Reds States, like my own, are hell bent on turning back the pages of history and throwing white paint (no pun intended) on the whole institution of slavery and Florida is one of the first to put a ‘happy face’ on the ordeal.

Florida education officials have changed state standards, in keeping with Gov. Ron DeSantis’ policies, to mandate teaching public school students that some Black people benefited from being enslaved because they learned useful skills. The state Board of Education immediately defended the policy, unanimously approved Wednesday, by saying lessons will still include the “darkest” parts…
