Daily Hampshire Gazette – Healing by Standing Together: Palestinian and Jewish Israelis draw 200 to forum with message of way forward

…Standing Together was founded in 2015, after the 2014 Gaza war that was then the deadliest war in Gaza, followed by a wave of violence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

“Benjamin Netanyahu back then had a very famous saying,” said Sally Abed, a Palestinian Israeli and prominent activist voice for Standing Together in Israel. “He said … ‘We will forever live on the sword.’”

The message that language sends, said Abed, is that “the security of Israel and Israelis necessarily means the subjugation of Palestinians. It necessarily means military control because there is no partner, and we will forever live on the sword.”

Eight years later, that rhetoric continues to hold more starkly than ever after last year’s election of an extreme right-wing government in Israel.

“This reality that we are in where we are stuck as a society in this endless cycle with no alternative — no one is giving the Israeli public an alternative; no one is telling them it can be different,” Abed said.

That alternative is what Standing Together aims to provide.

“Our focus is on the need for Israeli-Palestinian peace, and equality between Jews and Arabs inside of Israel. These are our core tenets,” said Shofet.

Since the war began, the group has worked to de-escalate inter-communal violence, set up mutual aid for families, create solidarity rallies, and organize spaces for people to safely grieve.

“In this war, we are firmly saying that the only way out of the war is a cease-fire agreement, immediately to return the hostages, and to end the killing of innocent lives in Gaza and the endless amounts of suffering in Gaza,” said Shofet. “But also the way forward is to achieve Israeli-Palestinian peace, and this is in the interest of everybody who lives here…”

Vertigo – ore de drum

Cuenca, 2017

Rollin’ on the Rolodex | From Behind the Pen

It’s interesting what you find in a box of office items that once sat on a desk from the past. To keep things organized and convenient for a quick reference of contacts, we had our trusty old Rolodex. For those who were never privy to use one, oh you don’t know what you’re missing. This was our desktop address book.  It was alphabetized and contained business cards or handwritten notes with names and their positions, addresses, phone numbers, fax machine numbers,  email addresses, and any other pertinent information for that contact. Usually,  your Rolodex was conveniently located by your landline phone for a quick reference when needed.

Rolodex is a rotating card file device used to store a contact list. Its name, a portmanteau of the words “rolling” and “index”, has become somewhat genericized for any personal organizer performing this function, or for a total accumulation of business contacts.
The Rolodex was credited for having been invented in 1956 by Danish engineer Hildaur Neilsen, the chief engineer of Arnold Neustadter’s company Zephyr American, a stationery manufacturer in New York. First marketed in 1958, the Rolodex was an improvement to an earlier design called the Wheeldex. Zephyr American also invented, manufactured, and sold the Autodex, a spring-operated phone directory that automatically opened to the selected letter.

As I stare at this priceless, functional little office necessity I once used religiously, I remember feeling so important, sitting behind my desk while conducting business. It may not be as popular today as it once was, but once upon a time, the Rolodex was a commodity among office accoutrements resting atop organized and optimized workstations ready to flip and rotate at a moment’s notice.

Marii Freire – Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!
