Terminal Stupidity — The Latest Pandemic | Filosofa’s Word

I have come to the conclusion that our friend Roger is right … there is a new – or maybe not so new – pandemic going around called Terminal Stupidity, or T.S. for short.  Let me share just a few examples with you.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything more stupid than this one.  In Tennessee, there is a law that a convicted felon, once released, can only get their voting rights back after having their 2nd Amendment right to own a gun restored.  In other words, if you are forbidden to own a gun, as most convicted felons are, then you also cannot have the right to vote!  What next???  Will they say that if you don’t own a gun, you cannot vote and in addition to a photo identification, you must produce a gun in order to vote?

Tennessee Democrats have asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate this ludicrous rule, along with other blatant voter disenfranchisement rules in the state.  Need I note that the rule, implemented in July 2023, was the brainchild of two Republicans, Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett and State Elections Coordinator Mark Goins?  Just what are Republicans so afraid of if everyone votes?  Seems to me that maybe they ought to be looking inside themselves for the answer to that question.

In Kentucky, two bills are working their way through the state legislature that would set the state back 200 years!  The first, House Bill 255, would allow teenagers to work longer and later hours.  The bill’s sponsor, Republican Bill Pratt, says it would encourage children to get “off the couch and quit playing Nintendo games.”

The second bill, House Bill 500, would strip Kentucky’s meal and rest break protections as well as seventh-day overtime.  No lunch hour, no 15-minute breaks, and no overtime pay for working 7+ straight days.  Note that Kentucky still has not raised the state minimum wage rate and it remains at $7.25 per hour, where it has been since 2009 – 15 years ago!  This one is also sponsored by Mr. Pratt…

Earth’s Twilight – Kaushal Kishore

As twilight falls, shadows stretch their reach,

Yet the sun’s warmth lingers, steadfast, not breached…

The moon, companion bathed in cosmic heat,

Absorbs excess warmth in their celestial feat…

*

Snow melts like glass with no liquid grace,

Sky wishes to console the earth with embrace…

Or the earth, unwilling to endure separation,

Soars to sky, seeking its destined station…

*

The rain of love from sky, a rare downpour,

Yet submerging the earth when arrives with sore…

Eliciting existential ponderings with heartfelt sighs,

Both the earth and its offspring query the whys…

*

Earth’s offspring, blossoms in semblance,

Yet torment her with bloodsucking allegiance…

Sharp teeth pierce her, a naive choice,

Over breastfeeding, a discordant voice…

*

Shadows elongate, a contemplative trance,

On the earth’s trajectory, a melancholic dance…

The sun descends with arms widespread,

As if poised to detonate a bomb, so dread…

*

Explosion hovers, today or on the morrow,

Earth’s offspring severing hands with sorrow…

That nurtured, guided, molded them with care,

Will they choose humanity, or explosive snare?

*
