World Food Programme says northern Gaza aid convoy blocked

The World Food Programme (WFP) says its first attempt in two weeks to bring food aid to northern Gaza was blocked by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The UN agency says the convoy of 14 lorries was “turned back” at a checkpoint and was later looted by crowds of “desperate people”.

The BBC has contacted the IDF for comment.

It comes a day after the World Health Organization (WHO) said children are dying of starvation in northern Gaza.

In a statement, the WFP said efforts to “deliver desperately needed food supplies” to the area resumed on Tuesday “but were largely unsuccessful”…

US now pushes UN to back ‘immediate’ Gaza ceasefire to free hostages | Reuters

The United States on Tuesday revised language in a draft United Nations Security Council resolution to back “an immediate ceasefire of roughly six-weeks in Gaza together with the release of all hostages,” according to the text seen by Reuters.
The third revision of the text – first proposed by the U.S. two weeks ago – now reflects blunt remarks by Vice President Kamala Harris. The initial U.S. draft had shown support for “a temporary ceasefire” in the Israel-Hamas war

The Arctic Ocean Could Be ‘Ice-Free’ Within the Decade, Researchers Warn – Slashdot

The loss of Arctic sea ice has long been a graphic measure of human-caused climate change, with wrenching images of suffering polar bears illustrating a worsening planetary crisis. Now, new research has found that Arctic Ocean sea ice is shrinking even faster than previously thought — and that the Arctic may start to see its first “ice-free” days within the current decade. From a report:That troubling milestone could occur before the end of the decade or sometime in the 2030s — as many as 10 years earlier than previous projections, according to a study published Tuesday in the journal Nature Reviews Earth and Environment. The study defines “ice-free” as when the Arctic Ocean has less than 1 million square kilometers, or 386,000 square miles, of ice.

By midcentury — 2035 to 2067 — the Arctic could see consistent ice-free conditions in September, the month when sea ice concentrations are typically at their minimum, the study found. The precise timing of such losses depends on how soon humanity is able to reduce fossil fuel emissions that are contributing to global warming. Under a high-emission scenario in which fossil fuel use continues unabated, the Arctic would be ice-free between the months of May and January by 2100, the study says. Even under a low-emission scenario, the Arctic would still be ice-free between August and October by that same year.

‘I’m tired of being afraid’ A Russian university instructor discussed Navalny with his students — despite running the risk of being reported — Meduza

After Alexey Navalny’s death on February 16, a history instructor at a public Russian university decided to start all his lessons with a discussion about politics — despite the risk that one of his students might report him to the authorities. Speaking to news outlet Sirena, the instructor explained why he decided to talk about politics, what they discuss at the beginning of each lecture, and how these discussions were received among students. Meduza in English is sharing a translation of Sirena’s story

8 pics: Palestinian Artist Paints the Suffering of his People on Cactus Plants | STREET ART UTOPIA

Artist Ahmad Yasin

For Palestinian artist Ahmad Yaseen, spiny cactus plants make perfect canvas for his drawings. The artist has impressed many by his original way of expressing Palestinian suffering: using something that no one had contemplated.

Rather than painting scenes from the ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, Yaseen draw elements that provide glimmer of hope. His favorite set of drawings is of two newborns – one is resting in his mother’s arms while the other is breastfeeding.
