Danke, Mutter Erde!
✨🙏✨

Songs I Like (88)

Money’s Too Tight To Mention.

I have featured this song before on my blog, but I heard it again recently so thought a second outing was in order.

In 1985 I was still living in Wimbledon in South-West London just before moving back to the Surrey Docks area. I used to frequent a record shop in a side street that was known to always have unusual records from new bands and singers in stock. Over the years the owner had come to know my preferred styles and tastes, so I would just go in randomly and he would play me records he was sure I would buy.

One of these was a song from a band neither of us had ever heard of, Simply Red. Listening to the song, we were both convinced that the band must be American, and the vocalist almost certainly black. He was correct to assume that I liked it, and I bought a copy.

It was only later that I discovered the song was a cover of the Valentine Brothers original a few years earlier, that the band was British, and the lead singer was a white man with frizzy ginger hair named Mick Hucknall. They went on to become one of the most famous British groups, sold millions of records, and are still together today.

I later tracked down a copy of the Valentine Brothers original. It has a different feel that is 100% ‘Funk’. I have added it under the Simply Red version, which I still prefer.

The lyrics are on the video.

Moon-child – yaskhan

I am a child of the earth
Raised by the stars in the sky
Tended by the moon as I sleep
Scars of the world clothe me
Her wounds rich in history.

I am bathed by the tears of the clouds
When it rains, the wind howls-in my ears
Apocalyptic....
When I cry-the earth soaks up my tears
A piece of my soul
Turning to dust;
And like dust, I rise
A storm of stardust
On moonstruck madness..

The sky calls out my name at dawn
Sparking the sun on my breast..

I am a child of the earth
The darkness and the light
The truth, the lie
Sorrow and joy
It's all there in the
Pen that I wield.
