Jeep is recalling more than 194,000 plug-in hybrid SUVs worldwide because they can catch fire with the ignition turned off.
In addition, Jeep is urging owners not to charge the SUVs and to park them outdoors and away from structures until they are repaired.
The recall covers the Wrangler 4xe from the 2020 through 2024 model years, as well as the Grand Cherokee 4xe from 2022 through 2024. Most of the recalled SUVs are in North America.
Like a leaf resting on still water,
I want to drift, unbothered by the current,
no ripples, no push or pull.
Just floating under the open sky,
where the breeze only whispers,
and the sun gently showers it’s golden rays.
No direction, no destination,
just the quiet surrender to the flow of life,
carried softly by the hands of the universe.
Time and again over the last 15 years, Laura Norman, a research scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey, has seen evidence that when these structures — which Norman calls Natural Infrastructure in Dryland Streams, or NIDS — are placed in gullies, they slow water to mitigate erosion, collect nutrient-rich sediment and plant debris that nourish both crops and wild plants, help store carbon, improve groundwater recharge, and increase downstream water availability by as much as 28 percent. “It’s a snowball effect that counters degradation, and you get all of these ecosystem services,” she says.
The structures on Nutlouis’s farm are integral cogs in a larger system of floodplain farming. It works like this: Nutlouis’s property lies in an alluvial fan, where mineral-rich sediments and plant waste atop mesas and other uplands wash down onto flatter ground with rainwater, snowmelt, and spring water. Across the valley, similar farms rely on this kind of system, many of which feature stone and stick constructions that Nutlouis helped build. The organic materials trapped behind the structures, says Jonathan Sandor, an emeritus agronomy professor at Iowa State University, “are a major input into keeping the fertility of the soils up.” Such small watersheds are optimal: “These gentle slopes and small watersheds allow runoff but reduce the possibility of high runoff velocities that may damage crops,” Sandor explained in a 2008 paper.
Two common abortion pills are, as of Tuesday, classified as “controlled substances” in Louisiana, due to a first-of-its-kind law that medical professionals warn will endanger the lives of women by restricting medication used to treatpostpartum hemorrhage and other conditions.
Louisiana, which already bans abortion, passed a law reclassifying mifepristone and misoprostol as schedule IV drugs – a designation typically reserved for drugs that carry a risk of abuse or dependence. People caught with the drugs without a valid prescription could face up to five years in prison, although pregnant women who procure it for their own use are exempted from punishment under the law.
Although the drugs are typically used in US medication abortions, they are also regularly used in an array of other circumstances, such as to help with miscarriage management, treat ulcers and soften the cervix during labor and other procedures.
Normally, at the Louisiana hospital where OB-GYN Dr Nicole Freehill works, misoprostol is kept in so-calledhemorrhage carts, which can be easily wheeled into the rooms where patients deliver babies and which carry medications normally used to treat hemorrhaging, including misoprostol. It takes about 15 seconds to pull the misoprostol out of the cart, Freehill said.
Now, due to the security requirements placed on schedule IV drugs, the hospital must keep misoprostol stocked outside of patients’ rooms. When the hospital ran a drill to see how long it took nurses to grab the misoprostol under the new rules, it took nurses two minutes, Freehill said.
“A lot of people might go: ‘Oh, two minutes, that’s really fast.’ And yes, in the long scheme of things, that’s fast. But when you have someone who is actively hemorrhaging – in two minutes, they can lose hundreds of cc’s of blood,” Freehill said. “So those seconds count. I’m definitely worried about what’s going to happen to patients who are hemorrhaging.”
The day at the “Pit Stop” warehouse in Bell, California, starts at 4 a.m. Forklifts move pallets of tomatoes, broccoli and bell peppers into trucks. Boxes of grapes and bananas wait to be loaded while trucks arrive with an abundance of zucchinis and nectarines. The 10,000-square-foot warehouse looks like organized chaos: A dozen employees move an average of 265,000 pounds or 132 tons here every day. “Share the Abundance” is written in bright blue letters across a yellow wall. The best part: All this healthy abundance is free. The nonprofit Food Forward receives the fruits and vegetables at no cost from wholesalers and donates them to those in need in 13 counties.
“Because we focus 100 percent on perishable fresh fruit and vegetables, speed is of the essence,” says Jen Cox, Food Forward’s Chief Development Officer. “Hardly any produce stays here for more than 24 hours. The logistics are insane.”
A new poll from Suffolk University and USA Today shows Harris with a slight 49-46 percent edge over Trump in Pennsylvania, thanks in large part to major support from women voters. It confirms a large gender gap in the race, at least in Pennsylvania, with Harris leading with women by 56 percent to 39 percent, and Trump earning male votes by a slimmer 53-41 percent. In appealing to women, Harris has pushed the issue of reproductive rights – a hot-button issue since the US Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn national abortion protections unleashed a wave of bans and restrictions in 22 states. #USA2024#genderGap#vote
This story was originally published by the Guardian and is reproduced here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration. Research shows that people in wealthier, high-consuming countries can help avert climate breakdown by making six relatively straightforward lifestyle changes, creating a society of “less stuff and more joy.” Experts say if enacted these “shifts” would account for a quarter of…
