Appearing together in the home town of Michigan’s largest university, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz sought on Tuesday to burnish their credentials with young voters and soothe Democrats who had grown nervous as the apparent deadlock in the race to keep Donald Trump out of the White House has dragged on.
Much of the rhetoric at the evening rally in Ann Arbor, a city synonymous with the University of Michigan and its nearly 53,000-strong student body, was aimed squarely at the first-time voters who have traditionally been a treasure trove of votes for Democrats. Speaking at a city park just south of the university campus, Harris offered comfort to a generation where many view their challenges as existential.
“I want to speak specifically to all the young leaders, all the students who are here today,” Harris said. “So, I love your generation. I really do, and one of the things about it is you are rightly impatient for change.”
“You are impatient for change because, look, you have only known the climate crisis and are leading, then, the charge to protect our planet and our future. You, you young leaders who grew up with active shooter drills and are fighting, then, to keep our schools safe. You, who now know fewer rights than your mothers and grandmothers, are standing up for reproductive freedom, and for you, then, I know that these issues that are at stake, they are not theoretical. This is not political for you. It is your lived experience, and I see you, and I see your power.”

Yes, there is a federal program to verify the legal status of immigrants. It’s fast and efficient but most employers don’t use it. Why? They need laborers, and they don’t care about their legal status.
The Los Angeles Times reports:
WASHINGTON — For all of Donald Trump’s railing against immigrants and Democrats’ insistence on creating a better pathway to citizenship, one thing almost no one ever talks about is a computer-based federal program that makes it easy for prospective employers to spot and reject unauthorized immigrants seeking jobs.
The program, known as E-Verify, is highly reliable and involves relatively little red tape. If fully utilized, many experts say, it could significantly curb the flow of undocumented immigrants by effectively removing one of the biggest reasons so many come to the United States illegally to begin with — getting a job.
Yet even though E-Verify is free for employers, with more than 98% of those checked being confirmed as work-authorized instantly or within 24 hours, the program is significantly underused.
Nationally the program is voluntary, except for certain businesses such as federal contractors. Most states don’t require employers to use it. In California, only about 16% of employer establishments are enrolled in E-Verify, even lower than the overall national figure of 27 %, according to a Times analysis of data from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Its low use reflects the underlying reality that many businesses — and the broader economy — have come to rely on undocumented immigrants. And in many ways, it’s both symptomatic and an outcome of what both major political parties acknowledge is a “broken immigration system,” in which unauthorized employment has become an intractable condition that employers, consumers and politicians have lived with for years.

…The overt sexism throughout the night, even by the standards of Trump’s nearly decade-long political career, was astonishing. Less surprising, given the campaign he’s run this year, was the figurative crotch-grabbing on display. When Trump running mate JD Vance mentioned Tim Walz, his Democratic counterpart, the crowd erupted into “tampon Tim” chants—to which Vance laughed. (Explainer here, if you need one.) And the “comedian” who opened the rally, Tony Hinchcliffe, said that Latinos “love making babies. There’s no pulling out. They come inside, just like they do to our country.”
These were not simply off-the-cuff remarks; they were very deliberate. It’s all part of Trump’s electoral strategy to Make America Masculine Again. He knows he’s losing women by massive margins, so he’s going after the men—especially, but not exclusively, aggrieved young men who feel they’ve been robbed of their male birthright to power. Trump is giving them license to say whatever they want about women, and his campaign is an implicit promise to give them control over women, including their bodies.
This is the pop-culture definition of toxic masculinity, and the crudest, most aggressive misogyny we’ve seen from Trump—which is truly saying something, given that he’s an adjudicated rapist who was caught on tape bragging that he can grab women’s vaginas without consequence. But this, perhaps even more than his reprehensible immigrant bashing and fascist overtones, is Trump’s closing argument: to put women back in their place and restore men to total supremacy in America…

Russian, Chinese and Cuban operatives have tried to amplify false information about the two hurricanes that recently hit the United States, spreading lies about the government’s disaster response, according to declassified intelligence cited by a U.S. official.
In one case, Russian “influence actors” shared a fake image on Telegram on Oct. 10, likely generated with artificial intelligence tools, showing an allegedly flooded Disney World in Florida, the U.S. official said Monday. A post on Oct. 9 falsely claimed the U.S. federal government was denying disaster relief funds to Americans.
Influencers linked to China have also seized on divisive material about Hurricanes Helene and Milton, claiming without evidence on social media that “U.S. spending on foreign conflicts had undermined support for disaster victims,” the U.S. official said.
An Oct. 1 post included an image probably generated by AI portraying Vice President Kamala Harris overlooking flood damage next to a sign saying that U.S. government funds have all gone to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, the official said.

The Netherlands — which punches above its weight in global science — is among the nations seeing drastic changes to its research system. The government’s budget last month unveiled the nearly €1-billion-a-year cut to universities and research, slashing support for early-career research grants, open science and international students.
The cuts are the equivalent of scrapping around one large university in a country that has only 14, says van den Berg. Several universities have already frozen hiring over the summer. The University of Amsterdam has described the cuts as the biggest since the 1980s.
One of the budget’s biggest victims is starter and stimulus grants, introduced in 2022 to give new and existing academics a one-off €300,000 grant to hire PhD students and laboratory assistants, for example.
“The aim of those grants was to create room for independent, curiosity-driven research, but also to reduce work pressure,” says Eddie Brummelman, chair of the Young Academy, a science-policy group in Amsterdam. Dutch academics have repeatedly gone on strike in the past few years over heavy workloads.
But with these funds gone, young academics will be even more dependent on competitive grants from industry and the already oversubscribed Dutch Research Council (NWO), he says.
The NWO also faces cutbacks: the changes remove €30 million a year from its budget for scientific infrastructure. Its funds for open science are being halved.
In a separate set of cuts, the new government has scrapped the final tranches of the Netherland’s National Growth Fund, which supported green hydrogen projects and medical research, saving €6.8 billion…
